HELP!

I need to get my little man to put on weight. He is just turned 1yr old, but is only 7 kg. This is average for a four and half old. He was not premmie and so there is no adjusted age to measure him against.

He was 2510g born, which is small, but he has been slowly losing ground over the 12 months and in the last 2 months only put on 50g.

We need to keep monitoring his 'gain' and go back to the paed when he is 2 to get him checked again.

In the meantime does anyone have recipes or ideas for weight gain.

I have used the breastfeeding growth chart, and he is going in a straight line sideways, losing percentage points, on it too.

He has been healthy and achieving his other milestones, but he has no stores if he gets sick. He starts daycare in one week and I go back to work in three weeks, so I am worried that he will starting getting sick from the other kids (as you do) and will have no reserves.

Hi Sams mum,
I know exactly how you feel, my dd is 2 and a 1/2 and only weighs 9.5kgs. She has been under the pead for this since she was 6 months, he sent us to an endochronologist (growth specialist) at 12 months who did countless test and still found nothing. The specialist finally agreed with us that there was nothing wrong with her, it's just genetics, 4 of her grandparents were under 5 foot as well as an aunty. We tried many different foods like the ones suggested all to no avail, but she does eat and eats all day long. My dd was/is the same as your ds in that she would only put on between 50 and 80 grms a month from 6 months of age. She also meets all her milestones when she is supposed to as well. Is your ds meeting his milestones when he should be? How active is he?
I also understand how worrying it is when they are on the small side and get sick, this has happened to us only once thankfully and she lost .5kg in a couple of days but she did put it back on pretty quickly.
I am only down the road at Everton Hills if you want someone to talk to who knows exactly what you are going through, sometimes it helps to talk to someone who is going through the same thing, I didn't have anyone when we first started with it all and I know how worrying it is.
Good luck and sorry I don't have any recipes for you but make sure that everything dairy that he has is full cream.

Mashed avocado and banana are great, I was told this concoction by my Health Centre Nurse when Jesse was little...not to mention all of the good stuff in it!
Just quietly...it looks awful but tastes sooooo good - I loved it! :o

I know how it feels when bubs doesnt put on much weight.
Im going through the same trouble at the moment with my lil bubba girl (will be 2 weeks old on thursday). Her birth weight was 2.635kgs, her discharge weight was 2.500 kgs. Since being at home she's only put on 100grams.
The midwife isnt too worried about it but did say that i need to somehow put more weight on her. Midwife said to give her more bottle feeds but it hasnt helped at all, so does anyone else have any more advice?

As your son is one he can go on toddler formula, my son is almost 4 and 13.5kg... I was told to give him toddler formula but made with fullcream milk not water, thats what helped him get to the weight he is now.

Other things we were told were to offer fatty foods such as custard as meals, custard and fruit salad is a healthy mix and helps them gain weight.

ds2 is just about to be the same weight as ds1 ( they are already wearing the same size shorts). ds1 is nearly six and ds2 is just about to turn 2. i guess ds1 takes after my side as im also small but ds2 takes after his father.milo and sustagen ive also been told is a great wieght gaining aids.but if they're to be "small" let them be small, just wait and watch.

Thanks for the advice, I will try them all so keep it coming.

I guess one thing that I should have mentioned is that no one in our family is short. A few people have said that they are small, so it is to be expected. My husband is 6ft4, I am 5ft10. My daughter sits at about the 90th percentile for height (but 50th for weight). My mum and dad are tall, my sister, nephew and niece are tall, my cousins, aunts, uncles etc - all tall. On my husband's side the one's that he has met are all tall, but he was adopted so he has only seen a few of his birth relations. It could come from his side, but it is just soooo unexpected for there to be a small baby in our family.

My dd and ds are both well down when it comes to their weight.

dd is 5 ½, 112cm tall and 15kg - her birthweight was 8lb 7oz at 37 weeks.

ds is 3 ½, 108cm tall and 15kg - his birthweight was 13lb2oz at 36 weeks.

Neither of them has any weight on them to lose if they get sick and unfortunately, my dd has an immune deficiency with regard to rotavirus and has been hospitalised several times, each time losing a couple of kgs.

I keep them on a diet of healthy, fresh food, plenty of pasta and rice topped off with a lovely drink of sustagen made with full fat milk after their evening meal. Neither of them are particularly interested in junk food which is really helpful!

There is no reason why my kids should be so little weightwise, but they are really active and seem to burn up whatever they eat. They look healthy and are generally in good health, so unless they are sick, I don't worry too much!

What they are like as little kids is no indicator as to what they will become as teenagers/adults. I had a tiny cousin who suddenly shot up at age 15 to over 6ft and became a solidly built (not fat) man.
