Hi There,

We are borrowing a 2nd hand bassinette from a friend of a friend and I was wondering should I purchase a new mattress for it?

If yes, where can I find one and what is recommend? Being new to all this your help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

I'd recommend getting a new mattress. You can get them from BabyCo, Baby's Galore etc & I think Big W Sells tetra mattresses.

I'd get a new mattress too. We are actually getting a new cradle mattress for #2 even though DS was the only one who used it before. If it minimises SIDs risks, then it's worth it. Clark's Rubber is where we will be getting ours.

I wouldn't bother getting a new mattress. As long as it looks and smells clean, I can't see a problem with it. Give it a good wash and leave it in the sun for a day or so, that's what I'll be doing with the second-hand mattress and bassinet we've got this time around. Last time I borrowed one from a friend and didn't even bother washing the mattress as I knew she was a clean person, I just made a new cover for it and used mattress protectors under bub's sheets.

the only reason id say yes also is due to sids risks, they reckon always buy a new mattress. in saying that though i always had the fitted sheet, mattress protecter and a sheet underneath my baby in her bassinette and never once was she sick or wee'd through to the mattress so i guess its upto you.
you can buy them from all baby shops :)

I didn't realise this either until just before DS was born. I bought a mattress for the bassinette from Big W - and for the $10 or $12 it cost me, I think it was worth it!

One tip though, either take the old mattress with you or the inside measurements of the bassinette as I had trouble finding a mattress that would fit. The Big W was slightly smaller than the one in there, but by the time you allow for sheets & rug it was ok - but I had bought one from a baby shop and it was waaaay to big. I do have the basinnette that DP was in as a baby - as well as the rest of his family  - it's a cute old wooden one.

definetely! my sister gave us the bassinett and mattress and although I know she is very clean, at our birthing classes they recommend a new mattress, it has something to do with SIDS...for the $40 we paid from Babies Galore its worth it.......I think its nice that a new baby has its own clean little mattress, just like we dont like sleeping on second hand mattresses!

ps the one we bought is an air flow mattress from Babies Galore

On the issue of SIDs......

"There has been recent media attention in relation to a theory that there may be a link between sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). Recent media reports have been warning parents not to re-use cot mattresses in the belief that S. aureus in foam mattresses is the trigger behind 50% of cot deaths.

S. aureus is a common organism that normally lives on the skin and in the nose and throats of healthy infants. It is therefore not surprising that S. aureus has been found in the foam of cot mattresses particularly if the foam is exposed and previously used by other infants.

Although there is some evidence to show that there is a higher incidence of SIDS on some second hand mattresses, it is not known what condition these mattresses were in or what position these babies slept in. There is no evidence to show that the risk of SIDS increases for babies who sleep on their back and on a firm, clean, well fitting mattress that is in good condition."

*The above is from here:
SIDs and Kids Safe Sleeping Information Statement - Second Hand Mattresses (http://www.sidsandkids.org/pdf/october05_statement.pdf)

We bought a new mattress for our cot as we bought it second-hand and we didn't know it's 'history' and it smelt strange. :barf:
But we are just washing the bassinette mattress and sitting it in the sun as it is basically in otherwise good condition.

Go with your own judgement.
