View Full Version : Help Pls...huggies leak- big wet'a
Hello,
I have an 8 wk old and we started out (from birth for a few wks) with flat terries, they were soaked immediately after he pee'd, then we had problems with the bulk and the effect that it had on breastfeeding and attachment.
(We were advised to change to a smaller nappy so this didnt effect the hip placement, that had led to the feeding problems. In short, went to Huggies and we all slept and fed better then ever..though I really dont like the idea of disposables)
Breastfeeding mums how have you found the fitted cloth nappies with feeding?
Which ones are the best for boys that pee and poo alot?
When he was in the terry flats, he would cry as soon as he was wet.
I know that this is great and what I want to help later with E.C., though he was not going to sleep or he was waking once wet!!
He is now in the infant Huggies (5-8KG) they are soaked every feed and when he has done a poo (mostly every feed) it is of expolsive proportions!! (we have to change immediatley or the clothes are covered in poo)
All ideas are greatly appreciated.....We really dont want to out lay money on fitted cloth if he is going to be unsettled with feeds, not sleep and wet'a then now!!
Thanks Heaps Ladies:confused:
Hi Shell! Our boys are about the same age. Cobey is a VERY heavy wetter (in 1.5 hours he'll have a heavy nappy) and his poop output varies, was once a feed, now it's one a day, last week it was every 3 or 4.
ANYWAY.. During the night I put him in infant huggies and found that the NEW ones (with designs on the front of the nappie - not on the grip-tab part) are much better than the older ones. He was leaking through the older huggies and the babyloves.
We're in Green Kids pocket nappies during the day (when they're washed) at home. We use a microfibre cleaning cloth for absorbancy and it contains his wee just fine! And his poo is help so nicely as they're a bigger nappy, so they catch more :)
Edit: We don't have any problems with breastfeeding, but I do understand the concern with hip-placement.

We used a mix of different nappies from birth and didn't really find any of them interferred with breastfeeding. Maybe trying different positions to get better attachment or pillows or even rolled up towels to help??? Little bubs grow so quickly that you'll probably find that they 'grow' into the nappies and a position that didn't work a week ago may work now.

Those explosive breastfed poos  I liked Tots Bots snappi-able fitteds because the terry loops of the fabric provided wonderful containment and the snappi meant that you could alter the fit just right for your bub. We had a few incidents in Huggies where poo went everywhere! That was probably my main motivator to stick with cloth in the early days because even though it was regular washing, at least it was routine and at a time that suited me, not having to strip the bed linen or constantly change clothes.
I remember one day when DS went through 18 nappies = 18 poos :banghead: I felt like I was constantly feeding or changing him. It does settle down and it's a good indicator that he was feeding well LOL. Did you use fleece liners with the terry flats? They help keep the skin feeling dry. For comparison, DS would soak a flat terry in an hour during the newborn phase because he was feeding so much. It's perfectly normal as they have so many growth spurts in the early days.
Back to your original question of which nappy though...it really depends on the shape of your bubba. Being a heavy wetter, I'd recommend going with a thirsty fabric like hemp or bamboo over cotton and if possible, a fabric weave like terry over flat ones like flannelette because there is more surface area to absorb. You'd probably be best off just trying one of a few well recommended brands before setting up a full stash.
Re hip displacement - cloth nappies are actually recommended to prevent hip displacement. My best friend's bub was told to change to cloth as her daughter had mild hip displacement from birth.
Re fitted cloth - I used flat terries with DD1 for 8 mths, and then used them to begin with for 10 mths with dd2. I now have hemp fitteds which are absolutely amazing. They go ALL night and sometimes she's not completely soaked through. I also have some bamboo fitted's ordered, and judging by what other bh's have said they are even better than the hemp.
The terry cloth really aren't that absorbant, and are prone to blowouts especially with that WONDERFUL newborn explosive poo (out the sides, up the back, round the front!).
Maybe you could look at buying 1 or 2 just to try, that way if you really don't like them you haven't had big outlay of money - on the other hand, think about how much money you'll end up spending on sposies. In my mind 1 fitted = 1wk of sposies. So once you've finished paying for the fitted's there's no more money to spend (unless you're addicted to cloth like alot of the BH's!), whereas you're constantly going to have to buy sposies.
I use Baby Beehinds, but there are tonnes of other ones. They have a layby option, are very flexible with repayment time, which is what I did over 8 wks. Made paying for them not quite so hard.http://www.babybeehinds.com.au/index.php
Re breastfeeding - a pillow is a must. I didn't use one to start with with DD1, but after a few wks my aunty suggested the pillow. OMG it made such a difference. Plus put your feet up on a little stool or similar, which I still find helps.
Oh, and what fold were/are you using with the flat terries? I like the Jo Fold the best because it gives maximum layers where you need it and only two layers of fabric at the back so it doesn't push bub's back up. It's also great for containment if you roll in the fabric around the thighs and you put it on to create a gusset effect. And for an inexpensive way to make it last longer, you could add a booster (any sort of absorbant fabric will do - face washers, microfibre towels, tea towels, strips of old nappies etc) in the crotch area between the nappy and the cover. And wool covers makes a huge difference with big wetters because it allows some of the moisture to evaporate leaving the nappy not so wet.
Thanks heaps for all the help.
Re- Hip placement- as he didn't have any hip displacement problems at birth, putting on the cloth in the "boy" fold, the one with more terry down the middle, made his hips spread out too much eg. he looked like he had riden a horse for hours and try'n to fit clothes on him well that I was another story.
The triangle fold was having the same effect, though on a lesser scale.
The breast feeding has been a dream since the change to Huggies.
I found that he was on an angel towards his head (from the bulk of the cloth) he is horizontal in the Huggies. Though would love to have the fitted cloth ones....so cute!!
I will have a look at the natural parenting expo, in October, at all the brands.
Thanks please keep the advice coming.
