at the moment ive only tried panadol, but next time bubbas sick i think ill try nurofen just to see whats better...
my sister says its best to swap them... like when my nephew is sick she will give a dose of panadol, then 4 hrs later give nurofen then 4 hours later panadol etc etc...

a doctor told her it works better???

I've given both (of course seperate occasions) but when Dakota or the kids have a temp i only give them panadol because if you give them nurofen whilst having a temp the nurofen doesn't do anything or it can make their temp rise.

I give DD panadol...i don't use nurofen coz I was told it can trigger asthma and coz I have it and DH did as a child I don't want to risk DD reacting to it while she is so young and unable to tell me.

I use Dymadon for my DS, he is 3yrs old...but I think that is for over 2yr olds. It tastes like orange...he didn't like the cherry flavor of the panadol.

I've only tried Panadol so far as DD has only just hit the 6 month mark. I've heard from a friend of mine that Nurofen works much better than Panadol for one of her daughters. I might try it out next time Sarah is sick.

I used both
Panadol mostly & nurofen for the really bad teething nights.
I try to never use nurofen for more than 1 night as it is a little stronger than panadol & it also has the anti-inflammatory ingredient.

 every doctor and pediatrician i've seen with the kids told me this.

Anyway.. i'll vote for Panadol because that's the one i use more often.

Due to a possible blood disorder, we can only give DS panadol. However, we were in emergency on Thursday as he had a temperature over 39 and climbing. When we saw the doctor, and having explained the blood disorder, he said it was a pity we couldn't give nurofen as it is much better at bringing down a temperature and much faster acting than panadol. DS' temp hit 40.2 and the only thing we could do other than panadol was cool washcloths on his body. The dr reckoned the nurofen would have been excellent in this instance, but obviously that was out for us.

DS was much better the next day. The fever was due to a viral infection, and there wasn't much we could do about it except panadol and keeping him hydrated.

I usually give dd neurofen, when she has a bad temp panadol makes her throw up and dosnt take her temp down but when i give her neurofen her temp goes straight down its the only thing that works ive also tried panamax and dymadon and they do the same as the panadol.

well the doctors in melbourne and perth must be using different text books  :p

Ibuprofen must work better for your DD. Children react differently to Paracetmol and ibuprofen. I guess use whatever works for your child. This is what i have been told but i don't know all the facts.

My bub isn't 6 mo. So I don't count. However I've been told by a paediatric nurse that if you're unsure of the cause you can safely give your child Nurofen & Panadol at the same time, as they both are different drugs and work in different ways (so you're not ODing, IYKWIM) :)

I use both, but prefer panadol. I don't think nurofen does anytthing really.

I have both here .. never thought of alternating though, sounds a good idea.

I usually use the nurofen for DD as it seems to work better (nurofen works better for me too), but I will try the alternating next time - it would probably help to reduce a build up of immunity to it (this is what happened to me with panadol with me, and it just doesn't work anymore - I used to suffer with really bad migraines and period pains as a teenager and used heaps of the stuff)

Panadol is my favorite and worked well with my bub the one and only time I have used it.

I'm actually allergic to Nurofen (ibuprofen) so I'm sticking to panadol. I'm also allergic to herron as well - it's not the paracetomal I'm allergic to but the "cr@p" that make the paracetomol stick together that I'm allergic to in Herron. (I've rung Herron about it and they informed me that that's what I'm allergic to - and it is actually called "cr@p" :p )

Well DS is 10 months old and i've never used either panadol or nurofen, so i don't know which is better. I use "Brauer Pain and Fever Relief".

I think Nurofen is better and you can give it with Panadol - we were at Emergency a week ago with Jesse, he had a temp of 40 and climbing...Panadol wasn't working and I didn't give him Nurofen because he's an asthmatic. The Doctor gave him Nurofen because it doesn't affect all asthmatics (and he'd had before he was diagnosed with asthma) and his temp came down. The Doc then advised me to give the Panadol and if the temp is coming down to use the Nurofen...they're too different types of medication.

I avoid ibuprofen because of the heart risks for me and DS. Panadol has always worked for us, but I've never had to deal with a really bad fever either!

I find that Panadol hypes MJ up too much. I could never take it as a bub, it took my breath away & made me throw up, everytime

All i know at the hospital they only give panadol to little babies who have temps or basic pain, nurofen is a totally different medication and will also work but it builds up in the liver alot easier so isn't as gentle on them but should be used if the risks of using it outway the issue your trying to fix

i give panadol for fever, and nurofen for pain. if DS has gone off his food, i only give panadol. ive been told that you should give nurofen after food (or milk) or it can cause problems.

I have only ever used panadol - just because it has fewer contraindications generally... I'd probably try nurofen if it was ever recommended for something specific, but I've only ever been recommended to use panadol so far...

Panadol, but if they are in a lot of pain with ear infections or tonsilitis, then I give both at once.

cobysmummy
18-09-2006, 09:26
i give both at the same time... if he is really under the weather... otherwise just nurofen... i find it works better and coby actually likes to take it so there is no problem!! he actually gives it to himself!!!

i was a bit skeptikal of giving him both at the same time but mil is a pharmacy assitant and told me it is fine.. and they actually do it in the hospitals...

and i love nurofens syringe too!!! its so damn easy!!! :D

We mainly use Panadol for Fevers and Nurofen for teething pain...

I am the same, the only time I use Nurofen is when they are teething as it has an anti inflamitry in it. Otherwise it is panadol all the way:yes:

My sons doctor informed me that prolonged use of Nurofen can cause liver damage later in life, so he doesn't reccomend it to anyone, especially young children.......

Also its an anti inflamatory......so as someone stated, it doesnt help with temps......

I actually now use the chemists own brand of Panadol-as it is only $3.95 instead of $5.00+ and has the same ingredients as Panadol......

I have used both over the years. But I like the Nurofen better. I find it works faster and better. Up to 8 hours. They now have a new strawberry flavour too. My older kids can give it to themselfs. In the easy to use syringe. I get mine from Chemist Warehouse 200ml for $9.95.

oh yeah i use the chemist brand of panadol because DS HATES the taste of the real thing :barf:
the cheaper brand is much better tasting, and does the same job... i wish it had a dosing applicator like nurofen though... so easy to use

I've spoken to a couple of Dr's from work about this and they've all said Panadol for little ones. The problem with Nurofen is it has to be taken with a full tummy, hassle during the wee hours of the morning. And yes it can increase temperature.

I voted Nurofen. Panadol doesnt seem to have much effect on DS.

I give Jess panadol my dr told me that its not good to give nurofen to children due to to the ibuprofen in it.

We use Nurofen, DD can't stand the taste of Panadol (can't say I blame her). Haven't had any problems with temperature rising, usually brings it down nicely.

18-09-2006, 15:18
we use panadol cos DF has asthma and nurofen can trigger attacks in astmatics, as we don't yet know if DD has it or not we don't think it's really worth the risk:rolleyes: :D

i use only pandol with ds1 because nurofen can cause his asthma to be worse. so when he is teething we just have to grin and bear it lol i think nurofen has ibuprofen(sp?) in it which is what causes asthma to be worse. coz i cant take the nurofen tablets coz of that reason.
