My DD (9 weeks) has one ear that sticks out more than the other (thanks to her dad!) and when she sleeps or leans on it it folds over. It now has 2 little "cuts" on it from where it has folded over during the night. Has anyone else experienced it with their child?

The paediatician wasnt concerned about it at her 6 week check. A nurse in the hospital when she was born said we should try to stop her sleeping on it but it is difficult to move her once she is asleep and even if we do she just rolls back over onto this ear. I wasnt concerned until i saw these little cuts or creases frm where it has folded over. Should i go to my GP?

thanks for reading

Hi Katie,

I don't know if its the same thing or not, but my DD always slept on one side of her head when she was a wee bub, to the point where when she was 4 months old, she had a very noticible flat spot on the left side of her head. Her left ear sticks out more than the right for this reason. When I asked the CHN about it, she told me I wasn't giving DD enough tummy time, which was ridiculous because I had her on her tummy ALL THE TIME!!

I ended up taking her to a paediatric chiropractor, who told me that DD actually had sustained a birth injury to the muscles in her neck, and couldn't comfortably turn her head to the right, thus why she was sleeping on the left side of her head. This is apparently pretty common, and the flat spot is called a plagiocephaly (Plagio-Kefaly).

Anyway, the reason that I'm telling you this is because it sounds as though this might be what your bub is heading for if she is sleeping on one side of her head all the time....and perhaps it would be good to seek some advice now, before the plagiocephaly actually sets in. I'm not medically trained, by any means, so I may very well be wrong - but I would have it checked out if I were you. Do a google search on plagiocephaly too, there are some really informative sites around, and you might be able to find more info...

HTH!

hmmm i dont think this is the problem as it affects her ear only and not her actual head in anyway. she also does sleep on both sides but when she sleeps on this ear it automatically folds over and causes a little sore on her lobe. thanks for the info though
