Hey guys, I'm new to the forums although I've been lurking for a few months now!
My husband and I are expecting our first child at the begining of March and I'm planning on using cloth nappies. After doing more research that my brain could take I've decided to start off using terry/muslim squares on the sprog to start off with, as well as a few pockets for when we're out and about and slowly build up my stash over the first few months. My husband had a fit when he saw how much cloth nappies cost so I figure if I start slowly now then he wont notice quite so much!
I'm fairly handy with a sewing machine and have been thinking of making up some PUL covers to use and then maybe even trying to put together some pockets from a few patterns I found online, but I can't seem to find PUL anywhere! I've checked in my local fabric store, and I've also been to lincraft where the closest thing I could find was curtain lining! (I figure it was cotton backed with something waterproof!). I've had a look around online and the only place I can find is ebay and only in 45x50cm squares, I'd rather buy a bit more than that so I can play and make up for any mistakes.
Do any of the lovely ladies out there know where I could find some PUL?
I also bought a nappy cover from Target yesterday, I was just so excited to see something relating to cloth nappies that wasn't online and I was just so curious about it that I picked it up for $5. It's a cotton outer with mesh, PVC lining and touch tape fastening. I looks cute but I just don't feel happy using PVC, I'd imagine it would get so sweaty. Has any one else used these before and could let me know how they got along? I'd much rather buy from target than online, especially at only $5, but if they're completely useless then I'll avoid.
Thanks in advance and I hope you're all having a great Sunday!

Hi there,
the target covers arent breathable, the ones online are more costly but much better in the long run and will have a better fit and stop leaks more. Not to mention last a lot longer than the target covers!
I dont know where to buy pul in bigger lots than what u already mentioned sorry, I'm sure someone on here will tho!
Did you tell your hubby how much you'll save on disposables by using cloth? that might help ease his pain lol
Goodluck with your nappy and cover making! :D

Hi neurofern,
I've bought heaps of PUL off ebay for making pocket nappies.
If you go to ebay.com and type in PUL fabric, you'll get a massive list of PUL fabrics.
You;ll get one company that sells a lot of it. Lots of groovy patterns.
You can also sign up to yahoo usergroups to buuy nappy fabrics.. but I wouldn't recomend it.. way to much monitoring when you have to pay etc...
umm.. you could try asking on nappycino... a lot of WAHM's post there, and I am sure they could suggest places and good pocket and cover patterns too.
Good luck... you have to let us know how you go and post piccies of your creations
I use the Target nappy covers during the day over terry flats and they work fine for me - I have not used fitted cloth though (due to budget) so can't compare.
PUL is just a polyurethane laminate (sp?) coating on any fabric. So you can have nylon PUL, polyester PUL, cotton PUL etc. Because nylon and polyester are not absorbant fabrics, they are the popular choice for nappy covers because they won't have wicking issues. Cotton PUL comes in many prints and designs so are very cute. PUL also comes in different thicknesses eg. 1mm or 2mm... There's lots to choose from and a reason why a certain product is chosen for certain situations. For PUL supplies, eBay as suggested is always handy and there are a couple of co-ops that buy PUL from overseas. Also check the nappy making supplies links on www.ozclothnappies.org
Re Target nappy covers - were they the Fluffies? I've seen them and they in no way compare to a quality nappy cover like a Motherease or Bummis or Tots Bots. The ones I've seen have a cotton outer which may lead to wicking issues; an acrylic wadding type inner which absorbs odours and a PVC waterproof layer which is not breathable and will create a sauna effect in the nappy area. The touch tape also looked pretty cheap which means you would most likely find it gets linty very quickly and stops 'sticking'. Total waste of money in my opinion when for under $20 you can get a good quality cover (my fave is the Motherease Airflow over flat terries) that will last more than one child.

I know that Bubba Earth (http://bubbaearth.com.au/store/) usually sells PUL, they seem to be sold out at present, but its worth keeping an eye on the site for when it does come up.
I've also found a few others:
Sewzanne's Fabrics (http://www.sewzannesfabrics.com/pul-polyurethanelaminate.html)
A cut above fabrics (http://www.acutabovefabrics.com/store/WsDefault.asp?Cat=PUL)
Diaper Cuts (http://www.diapercuts.com/store/Default.asp)
That's all I can come up with ATM! HTH

Thanks for the links and help guys. My husband knows it will save us money in the long run, he's just not very happy about the intial outlay, so I'm trying to find ways around that without resorting to cheap useless nappies.
The cover wasn't a fluffy I saw them and they just didn't look very good at all, plus the packaging said that they were only suitable for disposables. I'll take a photo of the cover tomorrow so you can take a look and tell me your thoughts, I think I might just steal the pattern and make up my own covers in a more bum-friendly fabric and save this for if we get desperate.
Neurofern - I think I know what covers ur talking about. I used them on dd1 for 8 mths, then dd2 for 10 mths. The plastic can rip after awhile, the cloth outer gets quite damp if it is touching the nappy, the velcro collects lint and I found that it kind of warps after time.
With dd2 i now have bb's fitted and their pul covers. OMG they are amazing - none of the above mentioned faults! Yes, slightly more expensive, but soooo much better.
The fitted's are more expensive, but I put mine on layby and slowing paid them off, that way it didn't seemed so expensive.

Check out this online store too:
http://www.nappiescovered.com.au/store/
It is shut at the moment but due to open again soon.;)
neurofern, there are also plenty of free nappy patterns online so that you don't have to resort to trying to copy and fix patterns based on other nappies. Or you can buy some inexpensive and very reputable nappy patterns to sew yourself (eg. HoneyBoys). There should be more links on ozclothnappies.org

I'd suggest just getting a few "proper" covers (or making them) in a small size and then you can see what suits you before spending alot on the bigger sizes you won't need for awhile. The ozclothnappies link mentioned earlier has a link to some printable nappy covers I think, otherwise there are a couple of us around who have been know to make them and I'm sure could share a pattern.
Don't forget you can make your own pocket nappies too for much cheaper than buying! They're very convenient especially when you're out and about :)
I've found greenbeans in NZ to have the best range and prices.
they also have a nice cheap snap press!
