View Full Version : Happy Spitter - Not so happy mum n dad!
Our 15 day old boy was admitted to Emergency last night for the second time in 10 days.
He is the happies little guy, seldom cries and sleeps consistantly - he is hard to burp though (it sometimes takes over 40min to coax a burb out of him)
On these two occassions he has eaten well and appeared to be settling down for the evening. A good 30 minutes after his feed he suddenly has a nast projectile chuck both out his mouth and nose. Its milk and there is also quite yellow spittle (I pressume this is from his stomach).
He then gets very upset and cries a great deal. You can hear that he has sick still at the back of his nose between his nose and mouth. When he exhales his cry some of the spittle will come out his nose but when he takes a breath to cry - the spittle goes down his windpipe and chokes him.
The first time this happened he went blue and passed out, we had to do CPR to bring him back. Last night we went straight to the recovery position and that worked better - he didn't pass out but he kept holding his breath because he couldn't breat out of his nose.
Has this happened to anybody else? I don't know if its reflux because its only happened twice but we can't see to understand when and why it happens as there are no warning signs or consistancy.
Would love hear that someone else has experienced this.

OMG, how stressful for you. What did they say at emergency? My DS had reflux but nowhere near as bad as that so I can't offer any advice sorry, the only suggestion I can offer is to get some reflux medicine that you give before feeds to help it settle. A friend had to do this with her bub and as far as I know it cleared up from then on. See your paed and discuss your options. Good luck :hugs:
:hugs: to you and your little boy.
Did the hospital do an ultrasound of your little boys stomach? If not I would go to your GP as soon as you can a demand an U/S to rule out a condition called PYLORIC STENOSIS. This is when the muscal at the bottom of the stomach closes about 3 to 6 weeks after birth. The symptoms include projectile vomiting about 20 - 30min after a feed, little or no weight gain, reduced urine and poo. My DS had this condition and at first it would happen every few feeds and the got worse until it was happening every feed.
It is probebly just reflux but given the age of your baby, the fact they are violent projectile vomits and the sex (PS is more common in boys) I would deffinatly request an U/S to rule this condition out.
Best of luck I hope you work out whats going on and you have no more incedents of him stopping breathing

I completely agree... get it checked out, better safe than sorry! my wee man did the same things your baby is doing his turned out to be medical too (except his was a milk protein allergy and server reflux) definatly get every option checked out...

My seven week old son is experiencing reflux after each feed too. He has always vomitted, but this has gradually increased over the past weeks; and now happens each bottle. He seems happy enough, but he is losing his chubby cheeks, hadn't had a bowel movement in four days (until today, phew!), and his urine output has decreased. I haven't noticed it coming out of his nose yet.
It is projectile at times, or whenever I stop feeding him to burp him, it all comes back up (a little chunkier though). Even after I put him down, an hour or even two after he has eaten, he cries in pain and needs to burp again and out comes more vomit.
It is bothering me more than him, and I think it is going to get worse before it improves. I have never experienced this before with my other kids and am at a loss about what to do next.
At first, I thought it was the bottles, teats, the position he was lying to feed, the temperature of the milk, the amount I was feeding him. I was driving myself crazy! Alot of people are telling me that it should clear up by six months of age - I can't see myself coping with this for another four and a half months!! I am not sure whether to change formula (he drinks S26Gold) or even thicken his feed somehow.
I will hopefully get in to see our paediatrician tomorrow and I pray that he can help us with some solutions for our little man to keep some milk in his little tummy.
See your doctor and Good luck! I hope that you can get some answers. It is terrible to see our little ones upset.
