View Full Version : Australian Theme Names Wanted
Hi Everyone
I am just gathering a collection of Australian themed names (TTC #2). I dont want to leave it as long as with DD she was 5 days old before she had a name.
My Daughters name is Matilda Shae
We would like to continue the aussie theme for first name and then a faimly name for middle name.
I like Banjo but my partner thinks it is awful.
Any suggestion on Banjo and other Aussie names would be great.

There is a wine writer (male) called Huon which I am assuming has some connection the the famous Huon forests in Tasmania.
I also have a friend (female) called Nerida which is Aboriginal for 'waterlily'.

This is off the topic I know but, I kid you not; a friend of mine in primary school’s name was Michael Jackson! He’s not even a Jackson, but his mum loves MJ! LOL
If you really into it, I suggest you to visit this site Australian History (http://www.dfat.gov.au/aib/history.html), I hope you’ll come across one or two ideas!
Good luck

What about town names, eg, Sydney, Adelaide, Murray (murray river), etc.
Maybe get an Australian Atlas out and have a look.
Good luck

I just love Clancy thanks for that Im going to put that one on the top of my boys name list. NOW can anyone help me to HELP my husband understand what a cute name it is
I love your idea, I was pondering doing the same thing with my children!
The only name I have been able to think of for you has been "Joey".
my friend has a baby boy called Jandamurra, an aboriginal name.
Ummm, trying to think of more
if your dh isnt keen on Clancy, just wait till just after the birth, most men at this point will give you anything you want and would probably even let you call it lalulaplop or something if you wanted! lol it is really cute hey, i like it too)( Clancy I mean, not lalulaplop!)

Just thought I'd say it's refreshing to hear some ideas and enthusiasm for Aussie names. Am I the only one who HATES the common obsession lately for giving kids those awful American place names( eg, Montana, Dakota, etc) ?? It all sounds a bit kath and kim to me :p Don't get me wrong, I am all for lots of different cultural influences and flavours to names...just think we are already Americanised enough!

Huh I guess you dont like ORLANDO then :p
Only kidding we get that alot "are you from Orlando,Florida, or something?" or "Is that after Orlando Bloom?" the answer is NONONONO. Its Italian like me and means Ronald in english after DH's greatgrandad (hated the name Ronald so opted for the lovely Italian version HEHEHE) Sorry if any one loves the name Ronald :p

Sarah, you prob won't believe me, but each time I see Orlando'smum on a post I think how much I really like that name! Cross my heart and hope to die!! :p
Ooops! Sorry if I offended anyone with my post re American place names :o
Taste is a very personal thing...and it's funny how the name thing can bring up strong reactions in people, including myself! Had my heart set on Charlotte, thinking my bump is a girl, but since finding out it's a boy it's gonna be Charlie. A few people have let us know they can't stand the name :D but they're entitled to their opinion!
SORRY, this was the Australian name thread wasn't it...........................
Love the name Banjo -as in Paterson- chosen by Rachel Griffiths for her first bub.
Lwason is cool too, maybe look into some of the other explorers' names like Flinders...mentioned earlier.
I also love some of the aboriginal names I've heard, like Mirri for a girl, which means stars in one of the dialects. Love Matilda, that was on my girl's list too Shae! Good luck :)
I went to school with a girl called Clancy, work with a guy called Flynn and one of my school friends called her daughter Orlando (after the virginia woolf novel), despite it being the italian version of roland. It does roll off the tongue nicely though!
If Matilda was a boy she would have been Flynn. :)

No offense taken Clairbear and I LOVE the name Charlie its very strong yet super cute :p Orlando has an Aboriginal name too (as his from the Wirradjuri clan) its Warra Gul meaning "shy One"- his GF called him that when we saw him on the ultrasound with his hands over his face!

Thanks orlando'smum and willsmum for your enthusiasm about Charlie...guess we all do enjoy approval in some way don't we? Yes i had decided we'd call Charlotte Charlie for short if a girl came along!
Another idea for Aust names Shae might be to look into sporting heroes......Bradman, Freeman, Gould, Fraser etc. or maybe I am getting too carried away here!! :p
Hi, I know a little boy called Banjo and he is the cutest kid! He's got such a great little personality. His older brother is Dakota and I think he gets teased because there are lots of girls called Dakota these days. He's just Dak for short. His mum desperately wanted to be original and have names that no one else had, but I think that's impossible in this day and age when there are so many babies and so many names! She even gets cranky when she hears of another girl named Dakota.
I also like the name Fraser - knew a guy with that name who was very cute!
