Hello there, I'm new to this forum but have been trying to find out a bit of info.... I'm 18wks pregnant and get many headaches that turn into migraines every 2-3 wks and that then turns into severe vomiting for a day and sometimes a visit to hospital. I've found something on the net called hyperemesis gravidarum but it doesn't say much at all about severe headaches that go with it - just wondering if there's anyone else that may have the same thing?? I'm starting to get a bit paranoid about the migraines and what it might mean. This is my 4th pregnancy and the other 3 stopped at 20wks but this one seems different. Or else I'm just a bit older and not quite as naive!! Any feedback would be appreciated. Thankyou!
:fingerscrossed:
Hi there , i also experienced migraines in my early pregnancy, quite frequently. I have experienced migraines on a monthly basis since i was 20 (pre pregnancy).
I also experienced hyperemesis but it was as a result of the migraine lasting longer than usual rather than causing the migraine in the first place. Hyperemesis is basically continual vomitting that doesnt stop even with drugs such as maxalon, and causes severe dehydration (leading to hospital stays to get iv drips), i had to be given medication called ondansetron (?spelling) and was on that medication for 5months til the hyperemesis finally went away. The migraines themselves stopped around 3months, im now 30weeks and have not experienced a migraine or hyperemesis since the 5 month mark.
My advice is keep up the fluids (i was told to drink lots of cordial, soft drink or juice not water), eat regularly but small amounts like a piece of dry toast, some plain crackers/crisps, and slowly build up to regular food.
Listen to your body and definitely see your gp (they can give you a maxalon injection which can prevent the hyperemesis if you get it early enough). Hyperemesis can be a single incident lasting up to two weeks or can last the entire pregnancy.
Good luck, hope that helped a bit :)

Thanks, zozz, is really good to know (in a weird kind of way!) that it is kind of normal to go through this. The maxalon does work a treat when its given thru the IV in hospital, not so much in the tablet form that I keep at home. So the ondansetron helped with the vomiting but not the migraines? I've got digesic at home that helps quite a bit but once the migraine comes nothing will touch it and never sure when it will hit.
Glad to hear you're much healthier now and can enjoy your pregnancy.
I'm really hoping my head clears up by 20wks like the other pregnancies. You have given me hope!
Thanks again
Yeah the ondansetron got rid of the vomitting, but i found as soon as i was able to rehydrate the migraine would ease a lot. Glad to hear the maxalon is working for you, and i hope you also experience a dramatic turn for the better soon :)
Feel free to pm any time if you wanna vent/ ask more questions

I had hyperemesis gravidarum when i was pregnant with my first child and it was terrible i was admitted to the hospital for dehydration 5 times in my pregnancy it died down to just normal quiziness after 32 weeks i suppose my body thought it had given me hell enough. I have gotten the headaches and everything like i did with him this time around and am just hoping the nausea wont start like it did with him around 9-10 weeks but i dont have much faith in my body lol i think it is going to make me suffer for going back a 4th time. will keep you all posted on it and hope that no one else gets it because i find it absolutly hell.

Thanks for your reply, cassie25, have had a bad coupla weeks. went to hospital again last week, dead on 20wks so i was quite deflated about that. but seem to be recovering better than the last coupla times. and i used to get really severe headaches after the migraines, when i tried to sleep once i got into a really deep sleep there would be an explosion of pain in my head and it would wake me up. only had one day of that this time so fingers crossed i'm on the mend. i've got school holidays and my husband about to start the seeding programme on the farm - i need to be on my best behaviour!!
how have you been feeling? nausea hasn't set in yet?? fingers crossed for you also, hope its smooth sailing!:gl:
