Hi ladies, i hoping to get some advice from you all.

I'm 16wk preg with my second child, i've had my 12wk scan and they concluded its a singleton preg, measuring very close to dates. But i cannot shake the suspicion that its twins. And the more i troll the internet for symptoms, stats, etc (dangerous, i know) the more convinced i am.

Firstly, the preg symptoms hit me hard just a week into it (eg. week4 from lmp). The hpt showed a very dark positive line immediately. I actually suspected i must have been a month further along as my lmp was just 2 light days, not my usual 5 days heavy. And i didn't think it was possible to get symptoms so early as 4wks.

The doctors did the blood test and a dating scan at 5wks. My hcg levels were really high, and the "mass" was double the size it should be for 5wks, but no heartbeat detected.
(couldn't that mean 5wk gest. identical twins??)

Next scan was 12wk, but the sonographer was relatively inexperienced (she mentioned to us that she'd recently finished training). I didn't feel she thoroughly checked my whole uterus, and i have heard many stories of one twin hiding behind the other.

Although bub measures normal size on the scan, my fundal height is much larger than average for my dates. I have had constant backpain. It is only relieved when i lean forward. I get the feeling there is one bub hanging out the front, and one leaning against my spine.

And although this isn't anything to go by, one of the elders in my tribe is adamant that i'm having twin boys.

My next scan is my 19wk morph scan which will be on April 29th.

What do you ladies think? Am i just being paranoid? What do i say to the sonographer at my next scan? If one is behind the other, is there any way to check??

:fingerscrossed:

Hi JustShiney.

If you think there is a twin then maybe ask to get another scan?

With my 2nd, I tested 5-6 days prior to being due for my period and a HPT came up dark instantly. I had mood swings, sore boobs, sciatica and bad back pain from a couple of days before I tested and I was showing by 8 weeks. My fundal height was also always larger than normal aswell.

As the weeks went on the back pain progressed as well as the sciatica. It wasn't until I was induced that we found out DS was posterior hence causing the wild back pain. Labour was intense, contractions felt like tickles compared to the back pain. Thankfully he turned before the birth!!

Anyway, back on topic.. There was only one. BUT like I said, I wouldn't be waiting until the next scan. I would be seeing my gp and asking for a referral. Just say you didn't feel like the sonographer did a very adequate job.

I was like this with my last pregnancy. I had very high hormone levels and lots of early symptoms. My dates didn't add up and I was actually really really wanting twins...
But...there was only one in there I'm afraid!

I think by 12 weeks another baby would be very very hard not to see. I know it does happen, but it is very rare, especially if they were picking up only one heartbeat..

Another vote for a repeat scan.

I just knew at only 3 weeks when I started getting morning sickness etc that I was not only pregnant but that it was twins. I knew for sure at 7 weeks though as had an early scan. DD1 was 4yrs old and she was positive I was having twin girls.

...especially if they were picking up only one heartbeat..

Sorry, i forgot to mention: at the 12wk scan she said she could hear some other background noise she was unsure of, like the echo of a heartbeat, thought maybe placental pulsing sounds but she was unsure.

maybe get another scan.

i know that this is probably not what you want to hear, but maybe there was twins? I lost one twin at 10 weeks and was told that losing a twin early in pregnancy is a lot more common than we think. it explained my high hcg, showing sooner and early sickness. at each scan i go to, even though i know my beautiful baby boy is there, i keep expecting to see another but i know that is not possible.

i hope she was wrong and that your gut is serving you right. :fingerscrossed:

The line on my preggie test came up quite dark very quickly two days before AF was due to arrive with my first pregnancy and symptoms kicked in very quickly. Pregnancy 2 took until 3 days after AF was due to get a pale line and i didn't get symptoms until 7 weeks. I'd be asking for another scan, or at least a more experienced sonographer if your happy to wait until your next scan.

(I lost my DS1's twin at 16 weeks, but was told at 12 weeks that it was failing to develope and wouldn't survive.)

This wont answer your question, but with my twins the nausea started at 5 weeks, with 3 of my singletons it started at 6 weeks and with my potential ADHD child it started at 4 weeks! Also, my fundal height with #2 was much greater at 10 weeks, then they scanned me and discovered a corpus-luteum cyst on my ovary, which eventually decreased as they baby grew.

I remember asking my ob when I was pregnant with my twins to be doubly sure that there were not triplets in there (we were in the process of buying a bigger car) and he said it is very rare that a baby is missed at this point, the only cases it does happen are with higher order multiples where it is much easier for a little baby to hide behind a heap of other babies.

Another scan would be a good idea, but I'd say the chances of twins at this point would be quite low, sorry.
