Hi Imogen Mummy,
Welcome to the bub hub club,I'm up in Brisbane but I'm always up for a chat
My son "Peter Ian" is 16 weeks old oh and he is soooooo cute :p
I can say that cause I'm his mummy :)
Hope you have fun here Take care

Hi, Imogen's Mum!
I'm in Canberra, too - but am only 5 weeks pregnant, so don't think I can be of much use to you!! If you can wait until May next year, I'll be free for mums n' bubs coffee mornings ;) !
But I would be interested to know where you gave birth in Canberra, and what you thought of the facilities and staff. I'm in favour of the Birth Centre at TCH - midwife-managed care sounds good, and the ob I had in mind is so, so busy, I don't think I'd get to see him much during the pregnancy. DH likes the idea of John James - but that's just based on decor andpost-birth comfort levels! Anyway, I'm inspecting the Birth Centre next week, so should have a better idea then.
Min

How rude am I!!! I post a thread and then don't even check it!! New mums brain!!!
Min- I gave birth at TCH in birthing suite as i had Pre eclamsia, first baby etc so wasn't accepted into Midwifery prog... which was Ok because I wasn't really overly phased about it anyway. I did shared care between my GP- Dr Verghesse in Tugg (fantastic, wonderful man) and the midwives and obstitritians at TCH. I found them all wonderful and would recommend this line to anyone! The midwives were fantastic both in birth and postnatal care. I had a somewhat difficult birth and the obstitritian, Dr and 2 midwives looked after me wonderfully... whatever way makes you feel comfortable. I know plenty of people who have gone JJ and they all loved it as well. It really is a personal choice! :D best of luck with it all.
Oops baby yelling- i'll finish this later.

I keep forgetting about the Canberra thread - ooops
My pregnancy is going well, I'll book in for my 20 week ultrasound this week for two weeks time, i can't believe how fast this pregnaancy has gone already.
Wow kylie I bet you are ready for that bub to be out of you!
I found the Canberra hospital to be great, except the nurses in anti natal but thats another story - and unless they are extreemly full you won't get stuck there you'll be in the birthing suite or in post natal. Is that what you meant you are going to go through the birthing suite?
My GP suggested that for this delivery, but if I go early again I don't think they would let me be there i'd have to be in the main hospital because i'd have to have a pediatrician in delivery too.
Anyway I'll keep checking this thread again now we've got a few more to chat with :D

Hello to all the Canberra Mums and happy new year. Maybe we should try and arrange a get together for the Canberra Bub Hub Mums. Let me know if anyone is interested.
Hi,
While I'm not a mum I am a nanny in Canberra and go through the daily jobs that a parent would. I would love to get together as not only does Charely (14 months) not get to interact with other babies, I myself don't know anyone in Canberra. If anyone has msn I'd love to chat on there sometime.

Just thought i would drop a quick line and say hi to all the other Canberra mums. I'm also a Canberra mum and know Shannan (imogens mum).
I the mum of the 3 1/2 month old Hunter that Shannan mentioned.
A Canberra get together sounds great.. count me in! Cant wait to catch up.
Hi Hunter's Mum I look forward to meeting you. It should be a good get together. Where are most people located. I am Northside. I think we need somewhere pram/stroller freindly and probably air conditioned considering the weather we have been having or at least with lots of shade. Regatta point cafe is nice inside or outside or botanic gardens have a nice cafe with big shade sales outside but it is pay parking. If anyone has other places they know of please feel free to suggest.

Not too sure about everyone else but i can say that myself, Shannan and Emma are southside. I'm not too fussed about venue though... like you said as long as it takes prams and is air conditioned!
Hello Canberra Mums,
I am also a canberrian! I live in Gungahlin and I am expecting my first bub on the 17th March.
I had no idea that so many people were from Canberra. I am actually having my bub at Queanbeyan Hospital as the midwives there are just fantastic and my Obstatrician is from there who is wonderful.
Hope everyone is going great and I hope to chat here regularly and keep in touch with everyone.

Hello i will be there- how do we get to regatta point cafe????
Is that in the rotunda on the hill??? In front of the captain cook fountain??
Shannan
Hello all,
Yes it is the rotunda on top of the hill near the captain cook water jet.
It is off Commonwealth avenue bridge, if you are coming from civic side you take the last turn off to the left before the Bridge. If coming from Woden side take the turn off to where Floriade parking is and go under the bridge.
I hope that hasn't confused you more.
There is parking close by. Here is a link from Where is for further info.
http://www.whereis.com/whereis/mapping/zoomMap.do?mapIndex=11&brandId=1&level=1
Yes, I know where that is. Not sure if I have the car or not that day but I will try to get there one way or another :)

Hi everyone,
I'm 6 weeks pregnant with my first, I'm actually living near Yass but we have to go to Canberra for birth these days!
I'd love to hear from people about their birth experiences, which hospital/midwife/obstetrician did you have, where did you do your baby shopping etc :)
This is all pretty new and a bit scary so it'd be great to hear from some others who've been there, done that !
Bec.

Hi Becbabe,
Congratulations. I had my daughter at Calvery hospital through the public system and has a great experience. There is an antenatal clinic where you see midwives for your appointments and it is usually the same one unless they are sick or on holidays. All the midwives were lovely. I also went to a one day birthing and parenting course or you can do it over 6 weeks one night a week. One thing I would say is Calvary is very pro breastfeeding which was fine for me but if you choose to formula feed you need to let them know and stick to your guns. There was a lady next to me who did and she seemed fine but I have heard that some people have been harrassed for not breastfeeding.
I would go back to Calvary if I have another baby.
Hi Mary_T,
Thanks for the reply - I was thinking Calvary would have to be the go, since it's so much easier to get to from Yass (don't want to put my partner or I through any more stress than necessary getting there!)
Glad to hear the midwives are great. I was thinking about the birthing centre in Canberra Hospital, but since I've got borderline high blood pressure I think I might end up being a "risk category"
I'm sure I'll be bombarding this site with questions - it's so hard since I don't want to tell family/friends/work about this till the magic 12th week - I have noone to ask these things!
Bec.
I live right near Calvary so it was very convenient for me. In regards to shopping for baby stuff I have found Canberra to be quite expensive. I have bought stuff from Mums and Bubs in fyshwick and Babyco in Fyshwick.
My mum told me there is a place in Phillip that sells new and second hand baby stuff which sounds pretty cool I haven't been there myself yet but want to check it out.
I also recomend going to garage sales or op shops and picking up second hand stuff as babies tend not to wear stuff out. I heard a quote that new stuff is one wash away from beind second hand.
This is a great place to ask questions and get advice and I have read about so many different things. We are starting to get a few more Canberra and local people on the site which is cool.
Hope you can come to one of our catch ups it would be great to meet you.

Congratulations Bec!
I haven't heard anything bad about any of Canberra's hospitals as far as birthing goes, so I think if Calvery is closer I'd go there.
Canberra hospital is great, but probably not worth the extra 30 - 45 mins to get there if it's already going to take you a while.
I can't recommened an OB as we went through the public system, and to tell you the truth I saw mine for a total of 2 mins right before I was discharged.
Canberra Hospitals Newborn Intensive Care Unit is better then Calvery's but most likely you won't need it - you could always ask for bub to be transferred there if you do.
As for shopping I've found Target to be the best and cheapest when they have thier sales. We got Noah's portacot and pram at 40% off. And they are always having sales on baby clothes. I try and buy a season in advance so I never pay full price. Big W has really cheap baby clothes, the quality isn't as good, and the sizes are smaller so buy one size bigger, but the prices are fab. Kmart has a mix of cheap and not as cheap baby clothes, and Best and Less can be good too.
We got our Cot from Babyco in Fyshwick, it was the best quality at the most reasonble price.
Also look on allhomes.com.au at the classifieds section, we got a double pram in excellent condition for $90, and it's all from the ACT region.
The store in Phillip is ok but I think it's the only baby store in town I haven't actually bought from though :p
Anyway good luck with your first trimester, and enjoy! :D
Em
Thanks for the advice. I've decided to go to Calvary as a private patient (why pay those fees all this time & not use it!) & have booked an OB and some antenatal stuff. It's hard not asking workmates & friends who've had kids, but we really don't want to tell anyone yet, so I've been researching it however I can & that seemed like the best option.
On a more frivolous note, I think the biggest shopping problem for me is going to be maternity wear.... I'm a tall (statuesque?!) size 22 which means I'm going to have to source some plus size maternity wear. Any ideas? If I can't find anything in Canberra I might start a thread looking for websites.
6 weeks today & very excited... according to the books it's the size of a thumbnail now!
Sheree73
08-02-2006, 13:25
The maternity fashion outlet in Fyshwick has alot of maternity clothes from memory and in all sizes.
I shopped there when i was pregnant with my first in 2003. It is still there now called Mama Wear, in Wollongong Street, opposite BBQ'a galore.
Also try Pumpkin patch as they have clothes and found their sizes quire generous and all adjustable.
Happy shopping.:)
Thanks Sheree, wow there really isn't anything you can't buy in Fyshwick is there?
I'd heard Pumpkin patch was good, I went there with my (sz 12) friend a few months ago but I wasn't thinking I'd be looking for me so soon so I didn't check the sizes!
I was just putting some party clothes away in my wardrobe & wondering if this is the last time they'll ever fit me! Oh well more stuff to sell on ebay.
Sheree73
09-02-2006, 13:15
Well don't throw them away just yet :D
Maybe use them as an inspiration once you have bub.
Thats what i am doing, i'm going to the gym to try to get back in all those clothes:p
Who knows if that will ever happen!!!
As you say there isn't anything you can't buy in Fyshwick......
Ah, they probably didn't fit me all that well to begin with - well not since Uni days anyway! Plus my lifestyle these days doesn't really lend itself to much clubbing activity... although as you say, dont' throw them away too quick. I'll keep anything I'm really in love with & sell the rest - just an excuse to buy more clothes really!
I've always been a fairly big sized girl, my weight doesn't fluctuate that much, so I'm thinking post baby kilos shouldn't bother me too much? Besides with the nausea at the moment, I'll be 10 kilos lighter due to the unable to eat factor! (can't even stomach tea at the moment...)
Sheree73
21-02-2006, 15:00
I couldn't stomach tea or coffee early on in either pregnancy.
Found MILO was great and real coffee. I just loved Latte's.
Mum's and Bub's have a great range of Baby products, look out for their sales on TV.
Always keep an eye out on the Target specials. They usually have a sale mid year which is a big toy sale, and you get some great baby bargains at that time, and its usually lay-by to christmas too.
Sheree
Hey thanks Sheree, sounds like some good advice. I don't think I've ever walked into a shopping cente and not gone into Target - we always seem to need something in there but I guess we'll be visiting some different sections now!
Milo....hmm. sounds like a good idea. I had a coffee for the first time in 5 weeks this week and it was nice, so I think that's a good sign that I'm moving past the nausea... wishful thinking?
For an Ob that visits Calvary, you cant go past Jakob Dreher or Andrew Foote....both are wonderful, ont beleive in intervention if its not warranted, and I found them both very supportive through my pregnancies and labours...
As for shopping, I found very little here too, and ended up buying most of my mat clothes off ebay....
Although there is a new mum'n'bubs type store in Mitchell, havent checked them out (as am not looking at travelling the maternity path again!), but they might be worth a look...
Calvary Private is WONDERFUL - make sure you apply for an Exec room, its not often you wont get one.
Congrats on your pregnancy and welcome to another wondeful Canberran baby - they are the best!
Hey thanks Roxy!
I've ended up going with the OB that my doctor recommended, and I was the last one to get in with him for that time, so he must be popular! It's Dr Armellin from Deakin. My Canberran friend said a couple of her friends had gone to him and found him really nice and gentle.
Glad to hear a good review for Calvary private - I had thought we'd ask for an executive suite, if you can't splash out on a bit of luxury for going through labour, when can you do it?!
I've been planning a day in Canberra for ages now to do some shopping for looser work pants ( I know, 9 weeks and already the thickening waistline appears!) but I'm always so stuffed on the weekend! I'm thinking I need to take a Monday off and head in then.
Mitchell would be perfect for me as it's on the way in from Yass, so I'll have to go have a stickybeak. I admit I've checked out the baby range in target here, and even that seems a bit overwhelming - so much stuff to get! We're going to tap the families first and see what they've been hoarding for us, then see what else we need to get.
Sheree, I'm loving the milo:D
