I heard newborn's poo is fatal and I should avoid using any cloth nappy.

Is that really true?

Has any mums out there use MCN or cloth nappy on new born and still loving it?

What's your strategy?

What do you mean by fatal?

My understanding is it can be an issue if the baby passes meconium (their first poo) while in utero as it means the baby is in distress. I have no idea in what other context it could be fatal?

MCN should be fine on a newborn - I waited til DD was physically bigger to fit into them but there is no health reason to avoid them?

We used prefolds on our boys. With DS1 he come home straight into MCN, DS2 we started about 6-7weeks.
I found pre folds held the poo's. Sometimes yes the poo's are fatal but disposables will not hold at all time either. Just get a washing system up and all is good.

After the black meconium passes (few days) babies poos are usually quite soft and remarkably like custard... Varying between pouring custard and thick custard if you catch my meaning.

I didn't worry about liners even, because milk poos are reasonably pale and not overly gross, it does just wash out of nappies easily. I used Terry towels and prefolds with my newby, so very easy to wash and dry.

And a good nappy cover is essential though with those type nappies, I like my bambino mio covers, or baby beehind covers.

I had bubs in cloth pretty early, but after the meconium stage (i was still in hospital then after c-sect)

Poo washes out really easily and the sun really is amazing! After my first wash I was thinking oh no this isn't going to work there were still lots of stains. Thought I'll hang them out and see what happens. A few hours in the sun and you could not see a single mark.

I also use flushable liners just for ease.

I just started using little ripples modern cloth nappies on my 8 week old they are good but unfortunately her legs are that chubby and it can leak through the sides. I was originally using normal terry flat cloth and folding them. But DH couldnt use them so I got MCN's

Im currently using terry flats folded and using the MCN as an outer cover until her legs get a bit bigger.

little ripples arent as expensive as some of the others. I got 20 with inserts for $77 check them out.

I have used MCNs with my DS from day 2 with no problems. It helped that he was 4.3kg though.

we used cloth as soon as we came home (2 weeks)
I still have a nearly full box of newborn huggies we are saving for the Sequel.

Little ripples used to leak but now dd is 4.8kgs I haven't had a problem since. I use two inserts and her bum is quite dry even though her inserts are wet.

I'm impressed with these so far.

I couldn't buy second hand nappies. You never know about any bugs and germs.

i personally wouldn't. You use so. many. nappies those first few weeks, more than 10 a day. No chance i was going to wash that many nappies whilst caring for a newborn. But yeah, newborn poo is going to go everywhere regardless of what you put them in, so even if you use sposies you will occasionally be literally up to your elbows in poo.

We used sposies for the first couple of days until meconium poos stopped. Neither of us wanted to be scraping meconium out of cloth. Since about day 4 we've used bum genius 4.0 nappies. We've had a few leaks with poo explosion but I don't think any nappy could have contained those.
Washing the cloth nappies doesn't take much effort at all

I've used terry flats on all seven of my newborns. I only discovered MCNs when DD7 was 4mo. However after discovering MCNs I would be inclined to try prefolds for a newborn - bamboo is softer than cotton.

I've got lots of mcns in the cupboard from using with DD1 but they're bigger sizes as I only started using them on DD1 when she was about 13 months. I do have some brand new newborn mcns though but I'm using sposies until DD2 is a bit bigger she's just too tiny for the cloth nappies. Also I had a c section so the last thing i wanted to do after coming back from the hospy was to wash and hang up so many nappies.

After u leave hospital I don't see any reason u can't use them if u don't mind washing.

Bums up have great newborn nappies which can be used for bubs 1.8-5kg & then move to the next size - they are great & not that expensive at about $12 a nappy

I used disposables for the first month, because I found this alot easier. I am a first time Mum, and it was hard enough getting used to having a new born and the lack of sleep, without worrying about washing nappies as well. Mainly because my son would go through so many nappies in a day. Once he was about 4 weeks old, and I was in the swing of things I started using MCN, and they are great. I just use the cheap ones on ebay, which are about $80 for 20. I guess it just depends if you feel you have the time and energy to wash the nappies or not.

I have just found out if you get itty bitty tuttos they fit very small babies. I definitely you could have a newborn in those nappies they are so trim!! The have inserts that you snap in and it looks confusing at the start but its a great system. The inserts dry quite quickly as they can be un snapped and dried separately. I have them on the clothes horse on the balcony and in non sunny day it takes roughly a day to dry.

My ebay cheapies from little ripples take only half a day to dry in the same weather.

Itty bitti tuttos also have a poo explosion barrier at the back to stop the poo going up the back, I haven't had a poo explosion yet.

I used cloth on my last bub from birth; he never ever wore a disposable nappy.
It really was easy, even in hospital.
The meconium poos weren't an issue. I did cut up some fleece liners that I was willing to just throw away, but it wasn't necessary, they washed up really well.

Hope that helps someone, I know this is an old thread but hopefully others will read it and realise that cloth from birth is totally do-able.
