My son is 15 months old. He is generally cheeky, happy, adventurous and all things a healthy 15 monther should be... but when I prevent him from touching something or he doesn't get his own way, he SCREAMS!
I tried to just ignore it... that didn't seem to help. I started saying 'shhh' and raising a finger to my mouth, lol, and now he does that too... immediately after he screams.
It's not like he screams for long. It's over quickly, but it happens alllll the time!
I know it probably doesn't sound like a big deal, but my ear drums think otherwise!
...and so do the general public when I am out shopping or on a train!

Does anyone elses child like to scream and squeal?
If so, how do you deal with it?

My DS3 who is just over 2 1/2 went through this a few months ago, he knew that it got to me so everytime he didnt get his own way he would do it, I remember him screaming in my FACE:eek: one day at play group in front of everyone & OH! how I would have loved to of throttled the little so & so, if he didnt want to have a nap he would lay on his bed for half an hour or so & just do these short sharp squeals because he new Id get P'd off & come in to the room, which is exactly what he wanted (terror!!!).
My DH & I cant stand screaming so we would say "Stop it I dont like that" which didnt work, so I learned to just ignore it & he stopped doing it because he was getting no attention from it.
All I can say is they do go through it & they do grow out of it, best to ignore it & hope its over soon!!!:fingerscrossed:

Thanks for that... nice to know I'm not the only one with a squealer!
I was starting to feel like it was my fault, like I had somehow caused it.
I guess I will just keep ignoring... and eventually, he'll grow out of it.

Oh yes!! my ds#1 did it and my 19 month old is doing it.
Totally ear piercing screams! either when he gets frustrated, upset or just excited lol. He will sit there and just scream until his face turns bright red and he gets all sweaty when he's upset or he will have a huge smile on his face and just start screaming when he gets excited.

Oh yes, dd has been a screamer since she was about 15 months old. Very high pitched and soooooo annoying! it carried on and peaked at about 18 months. I thought it was never going to end!
I tried ignoring it, but sometimes it would get so loud that i would just say 'ANNA WILL YOU STOP IT PLEASE"! in my loudest none shouting voice!

She would scream, i would say stop it, she would scream just to annoy me then, baiting me!:banghead: SO i would get down on her level and say stop screaming, and although she was only small , you could tell she knew exactly what i wanted. She would then scream her loudest! So i would go and put her in her cot for a timeout.

She would scream even louder and then start crying. I'd wait for 2 mins and then go in and say 'now you say sorry to mummy for screaming and give mummy a hug, mummy doesnt like it when you scream, i dont want you to scream anymore ok".(whilst hugging her. She would be resistant to stop crying but as far as i was concerned that episode was finished with. We would get up and carry on the day. Next time she screamed, i would consider if she was doing it to be naughty or if she just wanted my attention. If she screamed in my face etc i would always do the timeout.

This must have worked as she is just starting to not do it as much.

Hang on in there, it is just a phase, a horrible, horrible phase!:p

It is so good to hear that I do not have the only screamer/squealer. My DD (19 months) squeals at everything and gets extremely upset when asked not to do something. She actually puts her head down and sooks. DS did not squeal like it so I thought it was a girl thing, but obviously not. It drives me crazy because DS is always annoying DD and she squeals every single time.....
