I have a friend whos dd is called India and everyone calls her Indy for short. I think it is a nice name but also a name that is very "fashionable" at the moment, which means that it may date quickly. It is pretty though

I think it is cute, and if it does date and she doesn't like it later in life she can always use her middle name ..... :)

Honestly, my first thought was of all the Indiana Jones jokes she would get. But she'll be a different generation so probably the movie/character wouldn't be as well known in her age group and it wouldn't be too bad.

I don't really like places as names, for awhile it seemed so many celebs were naming their kids by where they were conceived. But Indiana is a pretty name.

I too thought of Indiana Jones when my hubby first mentioned it - but now he's said it a lot, it doesn't remind me of that anymore.

It would definitely shorten to Indy. I could see how it could date easily.

I'll have to think about this some more.

Thanks for all your honest responses.

Keep em coming if there are any more!

I think it's a pretty name, but like MarthaM it does make me think of Indiana Jones a bit... And I have a friend who has a dog called Indy. But hey - that's just me...

Good luck coming up with something - it's sure not easy!!

Cheers!

Love it myself.
Just remember most kids are going to be teased about something in there life. If its not their name it will be they are too fat, too skinny, too tall, too short etc etc

I love Indiana for a girl. When I had my DD it was down to two names Indiana or Montana. In the end we chose Matilda because we wanted an Aussie feel not American. Although my argument to DH was that Indiana was from the Indian Ocean (we are both avid beach goers). I also love the sound of Indiana Shae (my first name which DH had picked as DD middle name).

Okay, I'm going against the flow of posts here, but I'm being honest like you asked.... I'm not a big fan of naming a child after a country, state, city, river, etc. Dakota, Indiana, Georgia, India, Brooklyn, etc, are all names I don't like much.
When I travelled through Ireland, I discovered that there is not one person called Shannon, it would be like called an Aussie kid Melbourne or Dubbo or Wagga, or whatever. But there's a lot of different names out there and a lot that are worse than Indiana, so go with what you and hubby like most, and forget about what other people think!

Thanks for all your honest opinions.

Babyjoy - i do understand your comments but just had to add that I do know an Australian called Sydney and Adelaide and other towns in Australia. Some of these towns/cities are named after people anyway. ;)

But i completely get what you are saying!! I too felt really funny about the name at first, but its growing on me!

Mines an Orlando...but so not from the land in the states....his name appeared in my husbands dream...so you do what you must do.......I'd hate to think someone thought we named him after a place....its just not the case...

Honestly, I LOVE it. Indiana was right on the top of my list for DD1 but I thought she was going to be a boy so I gave up naming rights to Dad before she was born.... bummer!

If she didn't like Indy she could definitely be called Anna or even Diana if she wanted!
My first reaction was that it's a bit American but it sure is a pretty name!
