I'm attempting to make a nappy cake for my sisters baby shower in a few weeks.... I'm using terry towelling nappies for it and want to dye them pink (they will just be used as burp cloths). What would I use? I have absolutely NO idea where to start as I've never dyed anything before!

You can buy clothing dye in supermarkets or chemists and all the instructions are included. It's messy and you always have to wash what you've dyed separately afterwards but it's not a difficult job overall.
Dyes may have changed, too, since the 'old days' so the separate washing thing may not still apply.

Do a google before you head to the shops, there may be some good pointers as to which dyes will work best and tricks you can use to keep it colorfast. I seem to remember vinegar?
I dyed a whole lot of things rich indigo 6 months ago and they are still running slightly. Before you start, there's a product from the laundry section at woolies that washes dye from fabric, if you catch it while it's still wet. Great to have on hand in case you splash, or do accidentally wash one with other washing.
Also, your local spotlight/fabric shop may be able to help, and will have better quality/more varied dyes.
:) happy dyeing :)

I think salt also locks in colour. Some dye can be used in the washing machine but just be careful if you do that - I would hate for you to ruin your clothes.

Dylon (the one in the new black packaging) is meant to be really good and wont run if you follow the instructions properly. I'm planning on buying some cheap cotton white body suits and tie dying them blue and I was recommended dylon. :)
Heres (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PJnM6MK30U&feature=player_embedded) a nice pattern you could try

I got a powder dye from Spotlight today (too lazy to get up and read the brand from the packet but I know it's not Dylon), so hopefully it works. We're past the days of needing the burp cloths so I'm going to experiment on what nappies I've got here before I do it for real on the new ones for the nappy cake.... if it doesn't work I'll be getting some Dylon :)
