I am having trouble feeding my 10 month old Jakob. He was eating three meals a day as well as three formula feeds, though after a cold all he will eat is vegemite sandwiches and arrowroot biscuits. He doesn't like being fed at all and likes throwing most of his food around. Any ideas.

Hi jakobsmum,

My little girl's got a very healthy appetite but some days when she's a little tired or just moody, I give her a spoon. She gets so ingrossed in it that she automatically opens her mouth to accept the food on offer. When she starts to lose interest I pop some of her dinner (peas, corn etc) onto the spoon & she picks it up with her fingers & attempts to put it in her mouth.

Not only does this cut feeding time in half, it also has the advantage of slowly teaching bub how to feed herself/himself. Maddie has actually (about 3 times) put the spoon correctly into her mouth without any help from me. Now, if only I could teach her how to NOT blow raspberries whilst having a mouthful of food

Hope this helps,
Karen

hi jakobsmum

Eating is oulife style in our family (2 girls 4yrs, and 16mths), we eat organic and chemical free food. The first i'd recommend is no vegemite too salty and full of yeast, and no arrowroot biscuit. Back to basics , steam all sorts of vegies and see wich one he likes, avocadoes is a good one too.we started our girls with plain porridge, and steam vegies, they eat anything now.
Cheers
Nic

I am still having trouble with Jakob and his food. I have tried lots of things he can feed himself from all sorts of fruit and vegies to cheeses and yoghurts. He will eat bits of chicken and meat off our plates but that is all. I not sure whether tooth no.5 is coming. He is a lot more grizzly and tugging at his ears a lot. I dread meal times now and losing my positive vibes. Things that he has loved in the past are just not working. :(

When Grace is sick she only wants bottles...'don't come near me with food mum'. And If she is teething well just forget it.

When Grace started day care she was sick on and off for 4 - 5 months...temps every week, sore throats, coughs, permanent runny nose, so I just let her eat whatever she wanted...i'm lucky she likes fruit, cereal and vegies because she ate them for me. But she is fine now and eats anything.

Don't get dishartened, just try little bits of everything. Have you tried egg yolk yet? If there is no family history of allergy cooked egg yolk can be introduced from 7-9mths and whole egg at 10mths. Egg has lots of iron and protien so even that and a bit of toast (carbohydrate) some apple and vegies +/- meat in the day shoud be fine. If he is still drinking formula/breast milk then he will get enough nutrients from that.

My GP and Paediatrician has assurred me bubs will not let themselves starve or dehydrate, and when I stopped stressing, Grace seemed to settle a bit too.

Best of Luck Sarah

Just an update.
I took Jakob to the doctor today and he is OK in weight though he is very tall. 80cm! He has no ear infections, which I thought may be the problem, and is otherwise healthy. :)

She has suggested to drop the amount of formula from 240mL to 180mL. And also feed him all solid foods before his milk. Which I hadn't been doing as I thought if he wasn't eating then I wanted to make sure he was getting all his milk. Vicious cycle really. :(

I am a lot more motivated now that I know his health is not at risk, though we will be monitoring his weight over the next couple of months.

Touch wood, but Jakob is eating most of his meals! :D

I am yet to get him back onto his vegies which I spent all my time preparing and freezing weeks ago. Am determined to get there though.

Just wondering what sort of cheese to get for him. I am looking for a more economical alternative to cheese sticks. Duh, just had a thought. The Kraft block cheese is similar isn't it :o
