Anyone have one? What are your thoughts.
If my ultrasound shows nothing up, I will be getting one in order to stop my af being so horrendous as I'm still bf and can't go on the pill.
Thanks ladies.

Hi, I have one for the same reason. I had it put in early November 2009. AF was really terrible and I don't actually need contraception as my girls are are ICSI. It feels weird to have contraception as I haven't used any since 1993.
For just over 4.5mths I bleed pretty much continuously. Sometimes light, sometimes like a normal AF. But not like my normal AF, my normal AF was SO heavy. It was horrible. My Gyno told me if it worked for me then I could expect to go to a normal period and he doubted very much that I would get nothing or minimal AF like some women do. After just over 4mths he told me that maybe it wouldn't work for me but suggested leaving it a little bit longer. (For me it was that or a uterus ablation so I waited.)
Then suddenly at just over 4.5mths after getting it put in it stopped. And best of all I just get spotting which can be easily missed for 1 or sometimes 2 days roughly every 6 weeks.

I got one put in 2 weeks ago, I started what seemed like af a week ago, some days it seems like a light/mild af & some days it's very light spotting. I'll see how it goes & how long I bleed for.
Apart from a few mild cramps going in, the insertion didn't hurt at all. I don't regret getting it at all.

Yep, well for me it did. :D:cheerleader1:
I had horrible cramps but couldn't take much for them except panadol/panadeine/mersyndol due to other medication I take. And I was SO heavy that I had to be quick or get to the toilet really often if I went to the shops etc.
Before the initial bleeding stopped when I think may have been my normal AF time it was still dreadful pain wise probably the worst couple of days I had had in a while but not too heavy. (Might have been heavy for someone who didn't have heavy AF though.) But after that there was no pain at all.
My Gyno did seem to think it would be very unlikely it would get any better than a normal AF and no pain due to how bad it was but I guess I got lucky. :D
Sometimes I do feel a slight twinge in my tummy but it's seriously nothing and doesn't hurt at all. And I only need a liner 1 or 2 days every 6 weeks at the most. Sometimes I will go 12 weeks without noticing anything.
I had mine put in under a local. It did hurt and it was crampy for a while afterwards and I felt shaky. I think because I expected it to be similar to a pap smear and I felt a bit funny about having it put in.
eta: It would be the progesterone iud. (It's only a small amount) I doubt the copper iud would help with heavy AF as I have heard it make's AF heavier.

thanks danielle. i wish i had known about this years ago. have sufferd with the stoopid things for 15 years now.
thank goodness i had dd and found out.!!
i have to get a pa smear before they will put it in as well even though i had one when i was preggers.
so when you had it put in was a bit sore and a heavy period then 4 months of your usual period then all ok?
sorr for the 10b questions i want to get my head around it all.
Ive had mine in for just on a year now and I get a very light AF every month but its not much. It was a bit uncomfortable to get put in but if you take panadol before hand it helps.
Sorry for hijacking OP, I am also interested in getting the mirena put in after this bubba is born. Feels so strange to have been TTC and preggas for so long and now needing to worry about contraception!
I was wondering for the girls who already had it in, who did you go to to get it inserted and what did it cost?! I think it's about $30 to purchas the prescription and then you need to find someone to put it in, is that right? Can a regular GP do it?

I can't remember how much my Gyno charged to do it but I had my intial appointment to talk over my options first and then the appointment to get it done. (My GP said he couldn't do it but referred me on to the Gyno about it after a specialist I saw for something else reccomended it.) From memory it was about $30 - $35 for the actual prescription. But DON'T freak over the size of the box. It huge!! But the iud is tiny.
Ok, ummm I will try to explain how it was for me without confusing anyone. So, crampy and bleeding when I first had it done for about 24hrs or so. But it gradually got better so by that night it wasn't so bad and better again by morning even though I was still a bit crampy. Then the cramps stopped.
Bleeding was constant but varied between spotting to slightly heavier than spotting to a normal AF for a normal person (not my pre mirena normal AF). But with no pain at all.
Then when I think would have been my first normal AF (even though bleeding hadn't stopped) really bad cramps for 2 days and heavier bleeding (which stayed heavy for about 5 days or so) but not as heavy as I used to be.
Bleeding continued and continued and I had to see the Gyno again to check placement which we did at 4mths. There was no sign of the bleeding stopping at that point. Then just over 2 weeks later it suddenly stopped.
I hope that makes sense LOL.

Wow.
First didn't know it would cost thank goodness not much. Hope my gp can do it, she didn't say anything about having to go to a gyno.
Poo to the first few weeks bleeding but yay to the reduction in pain and that.
Do you have to get them replaced every few years?

I had mine inserted ny a trained gp who my family have been seeing for years.
It cost me $5.90 or something like that on pbs. I didn't pay anything to have it inserted.

Hi I got mine in oct 2010 when my dd was 2.5mnths. Was and still am bfding. I love it! No period at all. I did have strange bleeding for 3 weeks after but nothing since. It didn't really hurt to get it in and I was still tender then. I highly recommend it. Cost me $195 for marina and gyno to insert also had a papsmear aswell (cost would have been included) I do however every month get lower back pain, and everything swells up down there for a day (that late pregnancy heavy feeling) but they put that down to my supposed period.

The pain isn't as bad as it used to be is it?

Honestly for me I never had period pain so yes for me it's worse but not to bad. It's great that I don't actually get the period though. But yes it's a little uncomfortable but manageable for 1 day a month.
I had the Mirena put in by my OB just over 2 months ago and 1 week ago I had it taken out.
It wasn't pleasant having it put in but certainly not unbearable. I had bleeding/ spotting for the 2 months except for a 2 week break in amongst those two months.
The only reason I had mine taken out was my hair went extremely oily. I could wash it 3 times and it would still feel like an oil slick. I couldn't wear it out. My fringe looked like it was wet, that is how oily it was.
My Ob said that it would be the Mirena that was doing it and it only happens to about 1 /100 women who have the Mirena. I was a lucky 1!!
Otherwise it is a cheap and cost effective method of birth control plus as others have said it can definately help with horrendous AF. I can't remember the exact cost charged by the OB but way cheaper than I expected.
I know of several people who have the Mirena and they are so glad they have it.
Don't want to put anyone off at all just giving you my experience. :)

how odd oiley hair. and eww.. lol
well im glad most of you have had a good run with it. sets my mind at ease a bit. as i wasnt sure what the deal was with them.
anything to help af though as ive been putting up with it for 18 years (oh my god i am old) and now its just much worse and cant handle it anymore
how odd oiley hair. and eww.. lol
yeah it was gross, I was using it for birth control however I have heard from other people who have suffered like you have with horrendous periods how fantastic it is for them
Just 1 thing If you suffer bad headaches/migranes consider something else as it can make them worse I use to get the occasional migrain but now am getting them once a month to the point of throwing up and having to lie in a dark room and not move. Other than that I love it. Wouldnt have anything else if I wasnt having the migraines
