Poor little dude has had the flu, is teething and on top of all that, has an ear infection. I have taken him to the doctor, and to emergency once when his temp hit 40.5, and have been giving him panadol during the day and painstop at night. At the hospital they also gave me antibiotics, but I haven't given them to him, as I kind of feel like his little system might get a bit overloaded.

It has been almost 2 weeks and he is still not back to his perky self. I am a bit worried that I have made a mistake by not giving him the antibiotics... anyway, my question is, how long do ear infections usually last?

They can last for a while if not given antibiotics and they can get worse. My DS2 is forever getting them and when he was little it also affected his hearing, and yesterday we found out that he has yet another one.:banghead: So back on antibiotics and usually he feels better within days with them.

Good luck and let us know how he goes.

Poor little Luka....:hugs: :hugs:

Ry got an ear infection when he was about 9 months old and we honestly couldnt shake the pain and spiking temps without the antibiotics. We actually needed a couple of courses as it came back a week after the first antibiotics finished.

What I didn't understand at the time was that ear infections can still show in the ear in the form of redness, glue ear and liquid for about 6 months. This doesn't mean that the ear infection is recurring, it is just the way that some of their ears show the healing process.

I was going to Drs who continually would say that he still had an ear infection and finally I was referred to an ENT specialist for Grommets. The ENT explained the ear infection process - he was awesome - and also explained that there was no need whatsoever for grommets given the 6 month rule. All has been well since (touch wood):fingerscrossed: :D

Okay, so the general consensus is to give the antibiotics? Lol, perhaps I will go back to the doctor before I start playing medicine woman . Thanks for your replies.

You have to be very careful with ear infections & if you dont use the antibiotics you can be in for a whole lot worse !
I had one a few years back that i let go & ended up nearly losing the hearing in both my ears & ended up having rather strong antibiotics as well as penicillin to try to shake it. It took me months to get my ears back to normal as Kat said 6mths is the time period & i know have bad hearing because of it all :(
Dont risk it hun get him sorted asap.
Good luck :hugs:

My SIL who has 4 kids swears by this she has already told me what to do!

Crush 2 cloves of garlic in a t-spoon of olive oil, warm them together so it is just, just warm then strain the garlic out of the olive oil get a cotton ball soak in olive oil and place in the ear.

She did this for her son in 4 hours his ear infection had gone!
