I found out yesterday that my DS has to undergo a procedure in which he has to have a general...... and not ever having had anything to do with it myself I was wondering if anyone can give me any idea what to expect?
I want to know what to expect afterwards. How 'out of it' he will be for how long?
He will have a laryngoscopy, so if anyone has any info about those that would also be greatly appreciated.
Hey
DD has has mulitple GA over the year and it gernaly differs how she goes as to how well she is at that time the healther they are in them selfs at the time generaly the better they go.
DD has had larynngostopies done allso but nevron its own at the same time as her airway reconstructions, so was obviously under for alot longer than with just the scope so it would differ.
With a straight forward larygoscopy it would be a very quick procedure so shouldnt be under for that long so the effects wouldnt be as dramatic from a long propcedure KWIM.
You will likely go down with bubs to theatre and hold him while htey put him under then lay him down and walk out and they will do that they need t do then take him through to the OR.
Then you will get a call from the ward or day stay unit to go and get him frm recovery, he will have a drip in more than likely and be hooked up to a little monitor on his foot to measure the o2 saturations, they look scarier than they are, he may or may not have a mast on or prongs for 02 but even if he does its totaly normal
they usualy keep them in recovery for a short while then back to the ward or day stay unit. He may have a nice long sleep and then be fine or he may just wake up from teh GA as happy as larry.
Sometimes the GA can make them a bit pukey so they someimes give them some meds to help with the puking.
Good luck hope it goes wellxx
DD was out of it for about 45 min after her GA (she didnt really have any idea what was going on and was freaking out, really unsteady) and then just really sooky. They gave her some meds for vomiting like PP said. I was called in to see her after the procedure and just held her hand/ gave her cuddles as she woke up then they took us upstairs to the ward and had to stay for a few hours until she ate/ drank something.
DS1 and DS2 have both recently had a GA. DS1 is 4 and DS2 was 18 months at the time, they both bounced back really quickly - and it was as if it had never happened within half an hour.

My DS2 had a GA to have his adenoids out when he was 11months, when he first woke he was very distressed and confused, I held him for a bit and then he went to sleep and when he woke up later he was as happy as ever. They call you in as soon as there's any sign they're coming around so that you can be there to comfort them. The thing I found hardest was leaving once he was out(when being put under) , I wasn't prepared for him to be so limp like that.
