Welcome to the first lesson! :smiliedance:

If you think you might like to join in, check out this (http://www.bubhub.com.au/community/forums/showthread.php?t=398461) thread for details.

The first lesson is Composition And Impact - It's A Beautiful Photograph, But Do You Know WHY It's Beautiful? (http://www.morguefile.com/docs/Jodie_Coston:_Lesson_1)

Any type of camera or phone will do at all for this one :)

So read through the lesson this week, and then use what you've learned to complete the assignment:

Assignment 1: Take at least one abstract photo based entirely on some of the compositional rules we talked about. Subjects should not be recognizable. Post your photo online and send me a link, along with an explanation of why you think the composition makes a visually interesting image.

Assignment 2: Students will take pictures of a subject from various viewpoints (near, far, from above, below, behind). Creativity is encouraged. Likewise, post your best two or three photos of the subject online, along with an explanation of which you think is most visually appealing and why.

The assignment is 'due' on Monday the 4th of April. A new thread for the next lesson will be posted on the day before (Sunday).

If you like, please post your images in this thread! You don't *have* to if you don't want to though, but definitely use this thread for chat and tips!

Any questions just ask away - have fun :smiliedance:

Ok *big breath* Here goes!

I should preface this with the fact that I am not very good at creating shots, IYKWIM... I'm very much about the 'moment', so this was hard for me!

Part 1: Abstract shot -

http://www.flickr.com/photos/61132079@N08/5563397076/

I think this shot is interesting due to the flow of the lines in the fabric, giving the 'diagonals' that Jodie discussed in her lesson. I also tried to use the triangle theory, although I may have missed the mark a little there... :D

Part 2: Viewpoint shots:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/61132079@N08/5563399082/in/photostream/

I took a lot of photos of a leafy potplant I have (I have NO idea what it's called!) - this was my favourite. I have again tried to implement the triangle theory with this shot, and I like the contrast of the texture on the leaf in focus compared to the softness of those just out of focus.

I would love to hear feedback on why you think they do/don't work - fire away!

NewMamma - They look great! I really love the first one, of the fabric :D

That first one is a fantastic example of a 'circular' composition! An interesting and unique image too.

I love the grainy and out of focus background in the third....

Nice work! You definitely have an eye for photographic composition

This is a winner! It's a really comfortable, pleasing photograph to look at.... so that usually means the composition is spot on! I'd say it's almost an abstract too - with no colour in the image, the plant doesn't have the defining 'green' colour it needs to be plant-ish.
I like it

I commented on Flickr a few days ago when I first saw it, but I will say again I think this is perfect. You have managed to make an ordinary, uninteresting object into an interesting photograph :smiliedance:

I think of the three fork shots - the first and third are more pleasing to my eye  The first more so than the third - but that could also be simply because I viewed that one first.

As for me, I haven't taken mine yet  But I have been thinking about it and won't forget :D

Open a flickr account as we'll probably start a flickr group to add photos to. It's easier to see everyones work together that way.

Hi ladies ,
You've all presented such lovely work so far! I'm a tad nervous putting mine forward, but here goes:

Assignment 1- Shot. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/61328343@N05/5584422099/)

Assignment 2- Shot 1 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/61328343@N05/5584359379/), Shot 2 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/61328343@N05/5584947322/in/photostream/), Shot 3 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/61328343@N05/5584353953/in/photostream/)

I'm really enjoying the course so far. It's nice to try something new and have a sense of achievement from it (even if I'm not 100% happy).
Looking forward to learning and expanding photography-wise with all of you .

Oh dear! Here I came in to post one of my assignment pics, and just looked up to see if it was assignment one or two, and read that it's meant to be abstract! Oops! LOL :o
Well I'm posting it anyway, but I'm still doing an abstract one tomorrow and will post that too :D

So here is an iphone pic I took using 'the rule of thirds' for composition. I guess it sort of uses negative space too, but I wasn't thinking about that when I took it.

It's very fun, there are a gazillion different film and lens combos to try! Most of the time I just use it on random, but this one was taken with the John S lens and Kodakgrzzle (or something!) film.

The lens you choose will decide what the border looks like, and any vignetting or texture or blotches or scratches.

The film you choose will decide on the wacky colour and contrast and stuff.

They apparently are pretty good replicas of the real lenses and films!

I was going to use my old SLR but TBH I can't afford it :(

I tried my mums camera which is a lot better than my point and shoot but I was far from happy with the photos. I'll have another try today but it might depend on the lesson (and my perfectionism) whether I keep up with the course. Not happy Jan.

Hey Sarahjanesbaby, week 2 is here: (http://www.bubhub.com.au/community/forums/showthread.php?t=400315)

Ok here is my abstract, man it was HARD finding something abstract, and I still don't feel it is abstract! I used the 'rule of thirds' and 'leading lines' here.
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5104/5588310191_edec62a546_m.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/phozographer/5588310191/)94/365: Abstract (http://www.flickr.com/photos/phozographer/5588310191/) by phozographer [doing a 365] (http://www.flickr.com/people/phozographer/), on Flickr

Here is my composition one, choice of subject sucked, should have done something with more variety to it, like (iMicha's?) tap!

And I also did a 'frame' one:

Hey, I do a basic edit of all my photos, and it's completely up to you how much you want to edit, or if you want to at all.

And the c team is right, the course is entirely on camera skill, so definitely no need to edit!
