Hi there,

My son has recently started on Karicare Goats Based Formula - about 3 weeks ago now.

He is going 8 or so days between poos, and although he seems happy enough until it comes time to do one, it worries me. My CHN has advised putting him on Soy Formula.

I am concerned about putting him onto a soy formula. Esp since I have read that 50% of babies with an intollerance to Cow or Goats formulas will have a reaction to that as well..... With all the bad publicity of Soy lately, and its unknown side effects for the future, it really does worry me.

As a child I was alergic to Cows milk, but was fine on Goats. I'm just seeking advice really on should I stick to the goats formula or try the soy?

If I stick with the goats based milk (the cows was upsetting him, he was upset and unsettled) is there anything I can do to help make him more regular?

When he was breast feeding he was often 8-9 days between dirty nappys, but then there was no straining or pain when he went.

I am rubbing his tummy, giving him infants friend, prune juice, and cooled boiled water.....none of them seem to be making him more regular.

Please help....

Thanks!
Kat

Dear Mischief,

I’m afraid this is really a question for someone like a gastroenterologist or a paediatrician. It sounds as though the goats formula is not making him any worse than when he was breastfed – in terms of his digestion – but it hasn’t made things any better either. The question still remains as to why his digestion is slow in the first place.

I cannot suggest any more for your bub’s tummy than what you are already trying. Given that your baby has had some intolerance to cow’s milk based formula, it is possible that he will experience intolerance to a soy formula as well.

It is up to you whether you try the soy formula to see if / what difference it makes, but prepare for the chance of a negative reaction (as you would have with the goats formula), and seek some medical advice.
