We're considering hubby joining the RAAF and I'd be interested to hear of the opinions of other RAAF wives and what you do for employment - I have one toddler and don't want full-time employment. Would consider joining reserves - any comments?
My Dh is in the Raaf & so far we have had 3 postings & I can honestly say that I have had no problem finding work in any of them. There are always jobs going on the base at posting time & you can even find work on the Raaf base itself. I used to work at the local Defence Credit Union which was on the base & they usually prefer to have military wives working for them, as you can be transferred to another branch if hubby is posted. I've also worked for the local child care centre, working in the community is a great way to from friendships & helps you to feel like you fit in. I would not worry about finding work, if you want a job then you will find one
Good luck
Ciao,
Brooke.
My DF is Army & this is our 3rd posting. Our first was to Townsville. I did temp work for 2 weeks before I landed a permanent job - also at Defcredit. 2 years later we were posted to Singleton NSW where I worked for another credit union (not defence related). Now I'm a SAHM in Brisbane. I dont think you will have any problems getting work, I've never known any defence wives that have had any more problems that what would be expected in the civilian world.
DCO (defence community org) have spouse employment programs too - I've never used it but I think they help you with resumes etc
Good luck, I'm sure you wont have any problems
My partner has been in the army resves (sp) for 12years, he starts full time army in 2weeks 3days after our first baby due. And might be sent overseas in 2months.
We have only been together for 10months, its a hard descion to make for him to go full time but we sat down and talked about it and it something he really wanted to do.
