Not much shocks me, as I've seen a lot during my career. This though, is terribly heartbreaking. It left me wondering how this might happen? A child of alcoholics perhaps? Or maybe a child being given alcohol to keep it quiet. I truly hope this child recovers without any brain injury.

I'd like more info. What is their definition of the disease? How did the child survive at all? Was it treatment for Alcohol overdose that resulted in symptoms of alcoholism? I am Very .. No real info at all I can see.

Either way the child is too young for alcohol anyway

That's so terrible. In par with the young child that was addicted to cigarettes last year.

Although this is extremely sad and horrid, in London it doesn't surprise me.
As some people know mil adoption her half niece from London .. She was living in the foster car system and conditions were horrific - to say the least.

I hope that baby is now in a safe environment.

I agree - I was frustrated to find so little information too. I'll see if I can find out the specifics.

Unfortunately no one will ever know. The councils over there ... Their only concern is to cover their own back sides and not look bad to the world.

Even just..... Take for example their medical system. (off track from their below standard social work system) This day and age, in LONDON you can be diagnosed with HIV, and due to lack of medical attention and concern, it's something like 45% go on within 18 months to have full blown AIDS, and around 25% are dead within 3 years. But no one hears about this because they cover it up. We are in 2011!! People can live in aus for 20+ years with HIV!!!

Sorry but I have a very bitter taste in my mouth from what they have done to our family. Horrible, horrible, horrible.

Not saying the parents aren't to blame, but more then likely the councils knew all about it long before, but didn't act. Sad but true.

I'm really sorry to hear your family has had a terrible time, but I think it's very unfair to generalise like that. The child protection system in the UK is woefully flawed, yes. There have been some awful cases of missed neglect. However, I really don't think you can say that UK social workers
systematically and deliberately ignore neglect or abuse. In fact, the system has had a huge overhaul in the last few years. There have been terrible failures in this country too. A response to any allegation is only as good as the individual who goes to investigate it, that's the reality. In addition, the National Health System is still one of the best, entirely free medical services. I would like to see the statistics for the HIV vs AIDS rates, as I have not heard this before.

Again, I'm sorry you have had an awful experience, but as a Londoner I feel I have to defend my homeland (even though this article really disgraces us!).

That is so so sad :(

Right before I fell pg with DD I was offered a job as a CP worker in Slough, London, one of the really impoverised boroughs. The UK heavily recuit from Australia, offering handsome salary packages and free airfares. When I asked the Team Leader in Slough why they recuit so much from oz, he said that social workers in the UK only study for 2 years, not 4 like in Australia and do half the field placements.

SoI suspect along with chronic under funding, lack of training is another aspect.

Is alcoholism a registered "disease" with medically tested criteria or a "syndrome" attributed to all kinds of results????

My DD is in a FAS test study from birth to 18 because I am an alcoholic and drank when pregnant. She is bright and wonderful (thank GOD!) yet her ability to process alcohol was high - as shown in her Breast feeding tests.)

I am Beyond interested in what "Alcoholic" means in this case.

Delirium, I believe one of the overhauls after the last shocking case in the UK was that now all SWs have to have a degree. Of course that doesn't change the fact that there are still thousands of poorly trained SWs still practicing.

Sorry if I offended you - I didn't mean to... :hugs:

I admit yes our country isn't flaw free, but I think we are extremely lucky compared to England in relation to health and CPS...

Perhaps it was only because we delt with the worst uk council .. Given 1 star out of 5 in their child care review in their last review.
I wig I could tell you more about it, but I really can't put too much more info as after the lies upon lies upon lies, the council was ordered to pay us back our court costs for us defending ourselves...... Needless to say it's 14 months on and we haven't gotten a penny.

I really hope they have had a massive overhaul, as we know for certain they knew the conditions she was living in according to their report.

As I said, I am bitter. Personally I LOVED London, it was absolutely amazing and such a different kind of life, but I can't help but feel let down from our other experience. I hope I never have to deal with any one over there in CPS or health again.

Roarsome, I am guessing alcoholism in this case means the child had a dependence on alcohol to the extent that abrupt withdrawal, without treatment, would have been dangerous.

Atlantic Puffin, no offence taken at all. Again, I'm sorry as it sounds like you've had a dreadful experience :hugs:
