oh how sad. lets hope the little boy doesnt make her a great grandmother at 35!
on a funnier note, a girl i went to school with is in a relationship with a man who just become a grandfather (i think he is in his 40's). she has become a "nan" before she even has children on her own, at the ripe old age of 22 :)

So much for childhood. The 2yo grandson is already betrothed. Sad, sad, sad.

Isn't it interesting how we, here in Australia, believe that we are doing things 'right' - and others are wrong?

In her words "I am happy to be a grandmother but I wished something else for Maria - and something else for me."

I'd say being married at 11 is questionable in any society.

I'm pretty open to other people's beliefs and different cultures etc., I'm sure there are lots of things we do that other cultures see as wrong. I just cant be open to the idea of a child being married though, having sex, experiencing childbirth and being responsible for another life, all before making it into their teens.

It's not though - that's the point. Young marriages are the norm in many cultures (even if people don't always like the outcome).
A lot of the time they believe the way they are bringing up children/living life is the 'right' way.
I'm not particularly referring to that article though.

Just like here, we believe our way is the 'right' way - laws that state children under x years cannot be married - even if they wanted to.

(As an aside, I think arranged marriages and the theft of childhood is abhorrent, but I do think it's interesting how so many norms and practices in one cultural are seen as inherently 'wrong' in another).

I have a 12 year old and the thought of her going through pregnancy and childbirth is very painful.

:iagree: I see where your coming from. If it was illegal to be married under 30 and most marriages happened in mid 30s we'd see someone marring at 25 as incredibly young and wrong

All I can say is I hope "The Girl Effect" happens in Romania before too long. Yes, it is normal in so much of the world for marriage to take place for children. Looking at the worn face of the 25 year old grandma you can see why she would've wanted something a little better for her daughter. Pretty amazing really, and to think I'd probably be a great great grandmother at my age (43!).

I agree.. So much judgement in this world. It might not be the done thing here but who are we to judge their beliefs and customs.
