Here's a link to an article by a GP who has had four natural homebirths (one of which was breech). She explains how our hormones work to relieve pain and how synthetic pain relief can hinder the natural processes:

Great Article - and lots of other great ones on her website too!
And for Bris BubHubbers a special treat - Dr Sarah J Buckley is speaking this Thursday night, 14 Sept at the Paddington Community Centre on
Jubilee Terrace at 7pm.
She is WONDERFUL to listen to and the information she provides should be essential for all pregnant women to hear!
It is really important to make a booking for the evening.......call Genevieve on 3851 4010.
If you can't make it to the seminar, then DEFINITELY read her articles or her book, Gentle Birth, Gentle Mothering.

Thanks Demeter - you always post such great articles/references (although my head is still spinning about the free-birth stuff... so amazing!)
I wonder, have any Bub-Hubbers experienced this sort of hormonal pain-relief during labour?

Two years later and I can now answer your question  Yes I did, particularly when my DH would hold me. His touch eased my pain, it was amazing, I was not expecting that. You can read my full birth story here (http://harrietsfreebirth.blogspot.com/) if you're interested :)

Yep i agree anytime DP touched me or spoke to me i found it helped.
I also found the close bond i had with my Doula actually became so great that when she walked in all she had to do was hold my hands & i was calmed instantly.
I had started to freak by this stage & whilst i had an idea i was in transition i denied it lol ! I may have sooked still but they were all i truly needed.

Phor you guys were lucky nothing eased my pain. My hubby and mum were sooo suportive and I wouldnt let my hubby be any more than a couple of meters away because I wanted him to feel every contraction lol but didnt help with the pain :no:. The only time I felt eased pain was when my midwife came down and I grabbed his arm and cried why does it hurt this bad, I'm doing it wrong arent I. He had these big dependable eyes that were wide and he said, you're amazing, I am so proud of you. I've never felt so close to a stranger like I was at that moment. He was amazing. He cried with me when DS was born and I named DS after him. Im also hoping he comes to DS baptism. But anyway. I didnt really feel relief from anything except biting into a towel that took my mind of the contractions. I look back and I think the whole thing was unreal to be in so much pain and then not lol. Someone once told me that I'll feel like I'm about to die but it was the complete opposite I felt alive and powerful, my body rocks :thumbsup:

I have just finished reading an awesome book called Women's Bodies Women's Wisdom by Christiane Northup M.D. In it she talks about how some women seem to vacate their bodies when they are giving birth, while I was reading it I realised that this is what I have done during my previous births. I didn't vacate myself though, I went somewhere deep within myself and listened to what my body was doing... but for the most part I was oblivious to what was going on around me. The hardest thing about my last labour was going to the toilet (my bladder was full and stopping him from moving down) what made it most difficult was that I had to leave my 'safe place' and actually think about what I was doing. Thankfully I made it there and back in three contractions and he was born not long after. I did this without tearing which was a feat in itself because he was born with his hand on top of his head and I had to stop pushing when he crowned so that my midwife could ease his arm out without the elbow flicking out and giving me a massive tear!!! But I wen to the somewhere else place and said 'we have to stop for a minute so that we will be okay'. My midwife was amazed because my contracions stopped for a full five minutes and when she said 'you can push anytime you want now' I kind of nodded and waited another minute before I needed to.
I would recommend this book to any woman!!! It doesn't just cover pregnancy birth and beyond but multitudes of womens health issues!

Wow! Isn't a birthing mother's body fantastic....almost magical.
I really needed to read that...I have been really doubting my ability to have another natural birth and just really needed to cement that "i can do it" in my head again.
Thanks for posting that link OP, it has done me the world of good to read it and again trust my body.
