View Full Version : When to move up to next formula?
My daughter is just over six months old but has always been a small baby. She was born two weeks early weighing 2790 grams and has only now reached 6.3kg. I am not worried about her weight as she is really thriving and our GP is also happy with her progress... what I am wondering is if I should change to the formula for six month old babies. She is currently on Nestle NAN 1 (from birth to six months) and loves it, but I'm not sure if she is ready for NAN 2. Does it contain any extra ingredients that might give her an upset stomach (or some other reaction?) and are these changes in diet determined by weight or just by age?
THANKS!

Dear Babyjoy,
My understanding on the issue is that your bub doesn’t need to change formula just because she is 6 months old. Infant or stage 1 formulas can be more like breast milk, while follow-on formulas can be more like cow’s milk. While the energy content of the formula types is usually the same, follow-on formulas can have more protein and added vitamins and nutrients. However, if your little one is starting solids, the protein and nutrients can gained from these.
If you have particular concerns about your bub’s weight or growth, it is always best to check these with your doctor or a paediatric dietitian to find out which formula and foods are most appropriate for her
