Can anyone recommend any PHI that cover by due date rather than birth date?

I have been with Latrobe for 4 months on top cover and have just found out I am pregnant. After looking at Latrobe though- there is a higher amount of fees for the birth that you need to pay than other health insurance companies so I am looking at switching.

The problem is that my due date is going to be 2 weeks past the 12 month waiting period for most health insurances. After speaking to MBF ( BUPA) they will only cover after the 12 months, therefore if the baby was born more than 2 weeks early then I would not be covered. :(

Are there health insurances that cover by the due date- therefore even if the baby was born early- I would still be covered?

I have to say first off that I am only speaking from what I have been advised..

Everywhere I enquired with advised that the Baby's Due date had to be past the 12months, Not the actual Birth date.

EG
Joined Jan 20th last year, Became pregnant in May. Therefore Due in Feb this year. The baby is Premature and Arrived 30/12/10 It would still be covered as long as the treating physician could provide a letter stating the due date was past the 12month period. Hope that helps

I don't think any phi will cover due dates as that would be like predicting the future and due dates are not always right. If you have already served the waiting period then that same waiting period follows you to the next phi.

Thanks for the replies!

I think that Latrobe do cover you by due date- eg- as long as your due date is outside of the waiting period, then the baby will be covered whenever it is born.
Whereas BUPA only cover you if the baby is born after the waiting period. I just dont know if Latrobe is the only one to cover you this way.

I know I am fully insured with Latrobe as they have a 9 month waiting period which I am about 3.5 months into. It is just if I switch to fund that has a 12 month waiting period then I may struggle if they dont cover by due date.

Latrobe is.... umm... unique.

I've not heard of any other funds doing the same thing. I know most funds **may** consider claims a little inside the waiting period if it occurs, but it's not a given and will depend on the assessor of the claim at the time it comes in.

Do you have a public hospital that you would be willing to go to in case of early labour?
If so it might still be worth changing so a birth that has been taken out of your hands (ie early/emergency etc) is public, but an ideal birth is done in a facility you like, with your Dr, and at an affordable amount.

My fund Peoplecare will cover as long as EDD is after from what I was told, if bub came early they just need a letter from Dr stating the EDD is after the 12 months and all's good :-)

I have nothing but good things to say about this PHI, I am always 'looking for a better deal' much to my DH's dislike but be it car home or health insurance I always check up that value for money, customer service and product are the best for our needs and no matter how I try look at it, I just can't beat Peoplecare for PHI for us. Especially when they covered my DH's vasectomy reversal op just 2 months after taking out cover with them (and not having served the 12 months with any company prior to them) they looked at the VR requests and ruled it not pre existing meaning we were TTC 6 months sooner which os lucky as it is taking longer than hoped.

Thats awesome Nat! Most funds don't even pay for VR at all, let alone 2months after starting cover.

I know, we were VERY surprised, DH and I took out the cover with them then decided we wanted the VR to have a bub rang them to cancel cover thinking we should use the $$ toward VR instead assuming it's a pre existing condition and lady told us to get GP and surgeon to fill out forms for them to assess and to our surprise they said yes to cover op, as "just cause a man has a vasectomy does not make it NECESSARY to have it reversed" therefore they made decision based on when the NEED for a reversal came about, Drs declared (correctly) that we only decided and sort medical help to get a reversal AFTER we joined the PHI so they covered VR :-).

Sorry OP for going off topic....

I have been wondering the same thing.... DH and I are with Medibank Private and have upgraded to Priority Advantage Plus as of January 1, 2011 meaning our waiting period is not over until January 1, 2012. We have decided we want to try to get pregnant earlier rather than later and I don't know if Medibank will cover due date or birth date should we fall pregnant quickly and for some reason I am really nervous about calling the insurer to ask? Can anyone help with this?

How long did you have your previous cover, and did it have pregnancy?

But really it's best you just call. Write down the name of the consultant and the date and ask that they record extensive notes on this call so that if anything comes back to bite you, you can reference the call.

Medibank Private do cover due date. I inquired as my EDD was only a few weeks after the 12 mth waiting period. But of course you should check yourself just in case the situation/policies have changed.
