On 2nd of February (Chinese New Year), me and my family went to a restaurant for lunch happily. We put our 10 months old baby in children’s high chair between our seats, and we ordered two dish and beverage. When I was trying to take something out from the perambulator, suddenly I heard my husband’s loud shouting and baby’s crying loud. What I saw was a bowl of hot soup aspersed on the child's bosom. We immediately moved the hot soup bowl, and took the baby out. I took off her pants and paper diaper, and found there were several places of burnings in her navel and two legs, and the right leg injury was the worst.
After the ambulance arrived, the nurse used cold water treatment to the wound, the pain made my little baby kept on crying, nurse struggled to alleviate the pain as the baby is too young, and give her three needle small amounts of morphine. Because the baby is only 10 months old, can't use too much morphine, and also can't use other painkillers, so when thepesticide effect passed, the pain made her chewed her lips. Watching our baby’s suffering, my heart was bleeding.
After the incident, we had a brief talk with the shopkeeper, the shopkeeper said they have insurance, and they can make a report and baby's injury proof, and handed over to the insurance company. But the money cannot make our baby feel better, and the grief of the parents will never disappear.
Although the shopkeeper did apologize for the accident, I still feel bad because people should take this problem seriously but not only rely on to the insurance company .Doesn’t this restaurant have responsibility? Are we going to allow this so-called "accidents" hurt more children? Apart from insurance claims, the shopkeeper and waiter should be responsibe. If they could have basic safety awareness, this “accident” would never happen.
We can tell from this case, firstly, on that day, the temperature was 40 degree, and we didn't order any hot soup, that soup was free and we did not know about it. Secondly, why didn’t anyone tell us the hot soup is coming when they bring it to us? Even if they forgot, is it a common sense to bring the food/soup to the parents’ side if there is a baby nearby? Assume the soup accidentally spilled, is it going to pour down from the baby’s head! Moreover, why did the waiter still put hot soup on the table nearby by seeing the baby was sitting there? (There is still some distance between the table and the baby, and 10 months baby’s arm was not long enough to reach the table area.).
No matter where we are, looking after the baby should always be the first thing to do in public, everyone should know this. Is this a common sense on safety? How come the staff in such a service industry did not know about this basic safety awareness?
As I know from the hospital, we are not the first case of those accidents; it happens a lot when parents bring their children to the restaurant. In Australia, people need to learn OH&S in the construction industry, if the construction industry is a high-risk occupation, and workers need to learn the OH&S to understand safety knowledge because it may bring the security threats to the people. But to the service industry like restaurant, does it belong to the high-risk industry may bring threat to people’s safety as well? In this case, why not start to demonstrate for others and set an example in the services industry to avoid similar accidents happen instead of leave everything to the insurance company. This accident should be the warning to the unqualified staff and storeowners who has lack of safety knowledge, for the store owner's responsibility, and at the same time also can remind others to guarantee people’s safety concern. Keep other’s safe is a behavior of keeping everyone safe, include self-safety. If everyone in the service industries is able to do this, I think these "accidents" could have been avoided, and that will protect more and more children and parents from suffering the pain.

Although nursing a 10 months baby is very hard, we still feel very gratified by watching the wound concrescence well. An unbelievable news from the lawyer shocked us. The lawyer told us the Australia existing laws provisions, if "accidents" caused no scars and did not bring any harm to future life, insurance company is not grant to compensate for it. This has really disappointed me, we don’t get any compensation and nobody is going to take any legal action against the restaurant owner what can we do to protect ourselves and our families from the accident in this society?! If there is nothing we can do to avoid these accidents, the next victim could be your baby, and any of the kids may get hurt again!
As a mum of the victim, I wish there will be more and more mothers stand out for me, it is not only for my daughter, but also prompted the government to improve and consummate related regulations, to give our children a better and more safe environment!

I just want to say I understand your pain and worry about your beautiful daughter.

Also, I want to add that our daughter suffered burns at 16 months old. She was burnt across her face, down her arm and all across her chest. The hospital used some special silver bandages that I had to keep wet.

Our daughter totally healed and there is absolutely zero evidence of any burns now and she doesn't remember a thing.

I hope you can take some comfort from our little story and know that your little girl will be fine. As horrifying as it is, it will be ok. I still get a bit emotional thinking what happened to our daughter but the most important thing is she is ok now with no memory of it and I'm sure your daughter will be the same.

Take care, my heart goes out to you. :)

Ohhhhhhhhh:hugs: :hugs: :hugs:

I nearly cried seeing those pics. Your poor baby!!!!

I hope she is recovering very very soon. YES, I agree with you. The restaurant should have NOT just rely on insurance. It's a basic commonsense to be extra extra extra careful when you do things around young children.

I agree :hugs:

PS your bub is gorgeous, and hopefully won't have lasting scars. It is extremely irresponsible of the restaurant to have a procedure that let this happen. Even if you can't sue, surely there is someone you can report to so that their unsafe practices are investigated.
