View Full Version : throat pain while teething?

I'm so very confused right now. Still having issues with DS drinking his bottle, and I suspect it has to do with teething issues. He is whingy most of the time now (where he enver was before). He is waking at night and whingy/crying for no obvious reason.
I was wondering if babies throats are affected by teething pain??? When DS drinks his bottle, he will drink some, then stop, pull away and whingy cry, then drink some more, and pull away, whingy cry ..this goes on until he just flatly refuses to open his mouth by the end. He was such a good feeder. Drink the whole bottle without fuss in about 20mins and NO issues. It's kind of like when he drinks, his throat is hurting (that's the only reason I can think of as to why he is pulling away and getting upset repeatdely each bottle now.
Does anyone experince this, or know if it is true if a babies throat gets sore/irritated/whatever it is when teething?? I'm giving him bauers teething relief, and maybe panadol when he gets really upset and nothing else calms/helps him. Another Q - can bauers teething relief and panadol be given every day? I mean, what is the limit of how many days a baby can be given artificial relief??
But mainly I'm wanting to know about the throat issue (if that's what it actually is!) I've heard a baby's whole head can be affected..he does pull at his ears too.
ANY help would be appreciated right now! I just dont know what to do for him when it comes to feeding time as he seems to want the milk, but it seems to hurt him at the same time????????

Does he have a temp? If he's pulling at his ears, it could be an ear infection. I would go to the Dr just to rule it out as they can be nasty.
I hear ya. My ds does the same thing and I'm sure it's teething. With my ds we just have to ride it out unfortunatly, nothing seems to help. I've heard babies can get ear infections or at least sore ears when teething and I can see why it would also affect the throat. I know how frustrating it is, I hope he settles soon.

No temp. He was at the doctors last monday and had his ears checked, all good.
I've read somewhere that teething affects the whole head, ears, sinuses etc, this is why I wasn't concerned about the ear pulling. And this is also why I thought there was something wrong with thraot too...oh this parent thing is confusing!

just did a temp check - 35.7. Is that too low?? What's the minimum and maximum a bubs temp should be?

I've actually wondered the same thing for awhile now but wasn't sure if it was a silly question or not! :o I notice that when DS2 is teething he gets really smelly breath which I always thought was associated with a sore throat? When I mentioned it to the Dr he just kinda brushed over it and didn't really give me an answer. He doesn't fuss on the bottle though, so I guess that's a good thing, but yeah definitely has the smelly breath and is super whingy and doesn't sleep well....

That seems quite low, but it depends on what his normal temp is....... what sort of thermometer do you have?

Babies do fuss when teething, i know you had ears checked last week but i would consider getting them checked again.
DD use to fuss at a feed with an ear infection but display no other symptoms (no temp etc)
A slight runny nose is enough to give an ear infection. its to do with all the passages/sinus/stuff in the cheek bone! A runny nose can block a certain tube up and cause an ear to become sore/infected......did that make sense!
I dont think babies get a sore throat, but teething causes pain in the jaw and it hurts to suck.
Try Hyland Teething Tablets, they are natural and worked for us.

I'd get the ears checked again too. They can get inflamed pretty quickly. My DS gets to tonsillitis, and goes off food, but will still drink. So there must be something going on if he's not wanting to drink.

It's a digital thermometer, I'm thinking it's maybe the brand Omron?? (It's in his room and he is a light sleeper, so not going in to check!! lol)
I've only taken his temp 3 times, and it's been between 36 and 37 degrees.

So maybe the pulling away from bottle after a few sucks is his jaw hurting?? Interesting, It didn't occur to me that his jaw would be sore!!
I'd LOVE to try the hylands tablets!! But they are temporarily discontinued in all the chemists I've been to in the last 2 months!! (I'm in Brissy)
One other thing, not sure if it's related, but when he drinks his bottle, he fiddles with the side and back oif his head..he kinda plays with his hair, but this morning it actually looked like he was pulling his hair  He kind fiddles with his ears for a bit, and then his hair, then ears etc....weird
