View Full Version : rice cereal
DS just doesnot like the rice cereal- of any kind, brand or description ! Even when I try to sneak it past him with fruit or veg mashed through it - nope - screwed up face and a mouth that resembles a cats bottom. Is it necessary for them to have rice cereal? He yomps ( spelling??) down everything else .

Maybe try baby porridge - it has a bit of flavour (well, compared to the rice cereal) and it's a better texture too. My DS was never a huge fan of rice cereal, but the porridge is much more successful. I get the Bellamy's organic brand and it has all the added goodies (iron enriched, etc) that rice cereal has. I personally think porridge is better for them anyway as oats are more nutrtious in themselves than white rice. Rice cereal is a great starter as it is plain and easily digestable, but by now it is fine to move onto something else. There are also mixed cereals and baby museli available too, which are probably more interesting but I'm a mean mummy and prefer to add my own fruit - I wasn't big on the ingredient list on these products, but that's just me.
My CHN said that its really only for the iron content. So as long as you are getting iron in other foods, there really isn't a problem in not having rice cereal.
My little one never liked it much either, although he will sometimes eat the pear and banana flavoured rice. Also, much nicer mixed up with pureed pears.
I think once your bubs are eating more vegies and meat, that rice cereal diminishes in important.
Like grown ups, its having a balanced diet that matters in the end.
i tried rice cereal but quite frankly it looks like clag glue and ds was not impressed at all. so i skipped rice cereal altogether and started him on pureed apple and pumpkin which he much prefers.

Hi Lucyp, Have you tried baby muesli? My DS2 was not a fan of the old rice cereal, but really loved the muesli (heinz I think) and you can get muesli with apple and other fruits (made up the same as rice cereal).
I was also told (by clinic nurse) that these cereals are preferable for u/1yr old because of their iron content.
Hope you find something he likes!
