Can anyone tell me how a health care card works? Centrelink were nice enough to send me one but I have no idea what entitlements I can get with it. I have a dentist appointment tomorrow (hole in tooth). Will this be covered? If so, is there a standard amount I have to pay or does it change all the time?

it entitles you to discounts at the cinema, bus and train fare, scripts at the chemist, bulk billing if your doctor does that, some tafe courses, theme park entry and public hospital dentistry. pretty sure no private dentist accepts them(well here anyway) just ask if places do concessions.

From my experience when i was living in QLD you are NOT entitled to train and bus fare concessions-but you should ring the local transport providers to ask them, dont quote me on it

List of the basic things - not all states offer the same concessions - so you should always make a point of asking places if they accept HCC's..

Health

• dental
• hearing services
• home care
• optical
• ambulance

Household

• council rates
• electricity/gas/water rates
• telephone line rental
• housing

Education

• school fee relief
• Technical and Further Education (TAFE)
• state government education allowances
• training programmes

Transport

• taxi fares
• road transport registration fees
• drivers licence
• public transport fares
• regional rail travel concessions

Your very lucky to get one! I would almost cut off my right arm at the moment for a HCC!

I only got one because DF is being deployed to a war zone for 6 months - I would rather have him here & no health care card but I will take advantage of it while I have it.

Im pretty sure with the dentist you have to go to the public dental hospital, a private dentist wont do anything with it I dont think.
Also i live in bris and dont get any public transport concessions I have tried numerous times, but I do get cheap prescriptions, $5 docs for those who dont bulk bill and cheap cinema tickets.

Discounts for transport, theme park entry and cinemas are only entitled to by Pension Card Holders in QLD...ie Single Parent Pension Cards, or old age Pensioner Cards........

Cheap prescriptions are the biggest bonus.....and low or no doctors fees.....

Wish we could get one........

When you have a Health Care Card - make a point of always asking for a discount wherever you see them providing discounts for pensioners..
Alot of the time places dont say they offer them for HCC holders.

The bus and train system in QLD doesnt normally offer the discounts to HCC holders.. but I have known certain drivers to give it anyways.
(I lived in qld for 21 years)

For starters there was no need to be so rude, many people have repeated similar things........they like me, are sharing what they know.....

Secondly I have only lived in QLD for 8-9 years now, and have had a Health Care Card, but have NEVER gotten discounts on the things that you say you have (and have been told quiet rudely that I was not eligable for discounts on those as I wasnt a pensioner).......so I was giving the response in which I have been told by bus drivers etc.......

Good luck if you are lucky enough to get discounts on other things other than just health, wish I could have when I held a HCC.......I wish I would have known about getting discounts at the Theme Parks earlier.....

i was in no way being rude hence the smiley face and was saying as i said before because i had already said it once and didnt want people telling me off for posting the same thing twice. so maybe you read my post wrong and i am not being rude in this one either:D:D:D:D

i did get the discounts i mentioned why would i make that up? i agree that you should ask ppl as they dont always say they discount for HCC

Look cel......I have pm'd you as to why I thought you were rude, yes it was the way I read it.....anyway I also want to make it clear that I never accused anyone of lying about the discounts they have recieved, just stated what I have been told, and my experiences about not recieving those discounts......ok :D :D :D .......Dont want to turn this into another B!tchy thread........

Good now.........now dont know if anyone has mentioned, but the cost of prescription medications are only $4.70........instead of ridiculousy high prices...:smiliedance: ...thats the biggest thing I miss........

I've applied for one three times, but they denied me. They said in the first one that i didn't apply enough information, which i definitely did!
and i had my three forms of indentification, but obviously wasn't enough, So my mum helped me with going back to fill out the form for my next one, which they decided to deny again. And then we did it again, but nope it's been three months still no reply..
