View Full Version : Breastfeeding and Weightloss...
How the heck can you girls lose weight while breastfeeding?? All I do is go to the fridge, snack, feed, snack, play, snack... (I would say "clean, snack" but we all know I'm only trying to kid myself)
I am a bottomless pit! So far today I've had 4 piece of toast with nyummy sardines and relish (I can hear half of you thinking about how yummy that is, the other half pondering the nausea they're feeling) and I'm STARVING still! Munch Munch Munch.
But today! TODAY I claim to be stopping my bad-food snacking and starting my losing-baby-weight thinging... *jiggles the stripey flabbo* I have 5kg to lose to get to pre-preg weight, then I want to lose 15kg after that..
How am I going to manage this without pigging out everytime I get the urge. What food can I snack on that isn't full of fat & sugar? (bearing in mind I am not a fruit eater. I'll go Granny Smith apples and that's it. Maybe bananas but they cost more than a salad sandwich these days)
How do YOU do it?
I hear you Seek!
Arrgghhh, it is driving me nuts. I must say I went through exactly the same thing with O. I lost hardly anything until he started solids, then 10kg just dropped off like magic. I am starving constantly!
Weight watchers here I come.

Well given that you dont eat fruit thats a hard one, thats pretty much all I eat.
Carrot sticks and other vege sticks are good dipped in hommous or mashed avocado.
Yogurt is good too.
Nuts are yummy, almonds, brazil nuts, walnuts etc.
What about nice grainy crackers with tomato and avocado??
Baked beans are yum and very good for you.
You could try making a nice low fat smoothie, lots of calcium and you could sneak some fruit in....
PS, im a vego so thats why they are all vego options :D
Hey, I could have written that post!! I can't stop eating chocolate, and I mean that LITERALLY. I CANNOT make myself stop. The cravings are stronger than any pregnancy craving I had. I buy packets of chocolate biscuits and by the end of the day they are gone.
Today is the magic six week mark. As of 4.13pm today bubby will be six weeks old, which in theory means that everything is back the way it was. Today is the day I am supposed to 'resume relations' with DP, today is the day I am supposed to start exercising.
I have PUT ON weight in the last six weeks. In the last weeks of pregnancy I lost a bit of weight off my bum, but now I have a huge backside. None of my pre-preggy clothes fit, and believe me, I wasn't that small before anyway, so this is a huge problem.
They all said the weight would "fall off" from the breastfeeding.
Ha!
Bollocks.
Oh, and as for the "other". Forget it.
Hmmm well I was under my pre-preg weight by 6 weeks and doing the wild thing...then I was like WTF am I doing and chowed down and told DP to look after himself for a while :D
I am now at my pre-preg weight still under by 2 kilos mind you but I snack on Wholemeal bread with salad and smoked salmon, I eat le-rice these are great not sure they are very good for you though  Rice cakes these are awesome I LOVE them
Sultana's nuts etc
Man I eat a lot eh this isn't even including my 2 meals a day :o
Oh bugger off Pixie. :p
Yes! I heard the weight would "fall off" as well. "Best way to lose weight." Pffft
And cravings! ooooooo! I've been on a chicken bender lately, but not just any chicken, KFC, Red Rooster, Maccas.. Any chicken that's cooked with fat and put on a bun. MMMMmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Smoothies do actually sound good. And I was thinking of making myself 'snacks' for the fridge for between feed/awakeness/me being lazy. Shopping night tonight so I'll have to make a list.
I'm with tickle. Bugger off Pixie :p :p
Fine I am leaving, in fact I m leaving for good so nerrr :p
when you breastfeed your stomach is still having light contractions there for your doing a work out will feeding thats why you feel drained of energy & why your eating so much lol.
Hey Nikki how you been Chicky?
I've had 4 piece of toast with nyummy sardines and relish (I can hear half of you thinking about how yummy that is, the other half pondering the nausea they're feeling)
Yes, I'm definately in the latter half!
Oh bugger off Pixie. :p
PMSL!!
I think there are two types of women:
the first type, like Pixie, bounce back to normal and look great really quickly and they are the ones that say it will fall off etc.
The second type are the ones that never lose the weight and for the rest of their lives blame it on having the baby.
Hmm. I have my suspicions on which I might be...
I'm with you on this one!!
I'm eating MORE since breastfeeding and it's the bad foods too... cravings for chocolate and apple pie and yogo and milkshakes!! .....
I try and eat healthy but end up craving something bad :(
GRRR..... :banghead:
lol you girls don't want to hear this but i'm still breastfeeding my lil girl & she is 18 mths now & umm guess what i still eat like crazy
 Hi Kimmy!! How are ya?
Shed - I'm definately thinking I'm in the opposite one to Pixie as well.. mind you I did hear somewhere that it takes 9 months to get like -this- it should take 9 months to be 'normal' again.
Aww thanks Shed :o I still feel like a hefer though Nikki, want to lose about 8 more kilos so hmm the constant snacking isn't helping there.

Hey Seekrit
Congratulations on the birth of your little one - so lovely to see after I had a chance to meet you at the Brisbane pancake dinner a while ago.
I too bought into the myth about breastfeeding causing miraculous weightloss - I just felt SO hungry and thirsty ALL THE TIME, couldn't help myself. Having been there once and about to do it again, I am determined not to waste my extra calories on empty snacks, and go for low gi healthy things I enjoy like Burgen Honey & Oat toast, salmon, nuts (in small quantities) oh and by the way, eating more protein makes you feel less hungry plus it helps get the milk flowing.
To be honest the only thing that really got my weight off after having Neo was the nausea I had when I conceived no2.. I am right now 7kgs lighter than I was with Neo at 26 weeks gestation, and I am so happy. I put it down to terrible nausea and being sick (colds etc) very often with this pregnancy plus running around after my little man. Once this pregnancy is over I am going to give breast feeding one more shot and then REALLY get my body back together for real. Hubby has been so sweet and has offered to support me by getting me a gym membership to a local place that is for women only, and is just $10 per week plus $1 per hour for childcare... BARGAIN!
Best of luck, and try to stock your pantry with snacks that are good for you and it will help with the naughty stuff

LOL...you ladies are a crack up...
At least I know I am not alone in the weight department.
I have put on more weight since giving birth, rather then lose it.
I used b'feeding as an excuse, but now I have fully weaned I have to get off my butt.
I have managed to lose 10kg over the past 8 weeks.:smiliedance:
Unfortunately it seems to have come to a standstill....I'm still dieting and excersizing..but am getting no where. Its sooo dis-heartening.
I just read somewhere in the last few days (can't remember where i read it, could have the newspaper) that 'they' now say that breastfeeding does not help with weightloss...so there you go.
I remember when bf DD, firstly i never had any healthy snacks available or prepared, and so of course by the time i was really hungry all i craved was bikkies and ****. I'm determined to be more prepared next time.
After i had DD i weighed less than i had in years, due to eating well and ms all the way through. One year after her birth, i weighed more than i ever had. Thanks to weight watchers i lost it all and more, got to goal weight and fell pregnant again. Now my weight is climbing again ....but that's ok, i will know how to lose it the right way this time. You know i also found that the more i ate bad food, the more i craved it. Whilst doing WW and eating heathier i didn't crave junk food at all.
Im trying to eat better but I too have naughty cravings!!
I walk at least an hour a day,its great coz even if I do eat ****,I dont feel so bad because walking equals it out!
I'm a bottomless pit, usually starving by mid morning even though I have to have a huge breakie. BUT I have to walk everywhere as DF has to take the car to work.
So, morning and afternoon I walk to and from DD1's school (4km total). If I go anywhere else it's walking, walking, walking.
Even when I'd just had DD2, had episiotomy stitches, and haemmoroids like a bunch of grapes, I still walked leaning on DD2's pram for support, even though I walked about as fast as a galapagos tortosie:D I must have looked quite a sight!
I got back to my pre-preg weight with both DD1 and DD2 pretty quickly. It's different for everyone though, I have a pretty fast metabolism, plus it's in my genes. I've only got 1 auntie who's overweight (due to 10 yrs IVF though), plus a few of the guys (but they're beer guts!).
Good luck Seekrit
hey seek.....
i've been stocking the cupboards with rice crackers, meusli bars, low fat muffins, etc.... and yoghurt & fruit.... Pasta has been my staple dinner wise.... though like you shed... choccy biccies always appear on the shopping list and are polished off the same day!!
only 1kg to go til pre-preg weight but considering i know have jugs i never had before i'd say i'm the size i was before bubs... actually a little slimmer besides some loose belly skin.... and we haven't been able to start exercising yet!

Oh I hear you! I try and say it is because I am pg but hmmmm I think it is more a bit of both being pg and breastfeeding in my case.

yeah I hear ya, what to do? my little one is almost onE and I still have not started my healthy eating/exceersise plan! I think I will have to keep him on the:banghead: :banghead: boob forever at this rate!
I guess I am one of "those" people......:o
When I was pg I only put on 8kgs - DS was 4kgs - and I was was back in my pre-preg clothes at 6 weeks- I ate like a horse while pg (mainly healthy stuff) and still do. I guess I just got a 'thirsty' baby, he is 5 months weighs 9.5kgs and is still feeding every 2-3 hrs during the day.
ooer just got back from shopping...
whole meal bread, vitawheat crackers, weight-watchers muesli bars, yoghurt, all bran ceral (making Fibre my Friend :p) and.... marshmellows :o they were at the top of EVERY AISLE! I couldn't help it!

I am the same I just eat eat eat!!!! Chocolate is the killer for me!!!
LOL I was a very petite person before DS's arrival. Then I started breastfeeding and the incredible hunger that came with it  I would polish a huge steak and veg dinner and then eye off DH's LOL. What I did try to do was always have healthy type snacks and eat when feeling hungry so I didn't just graze and snack on rubbish all day. I found that I put on weight for the first year and a bit of BFing (went up 2 dress sizes) and DH actually even started to comment about my needing to go to the gym. I found that when I tried to exercise or cut back on my food intake, my BM supply would drop so I just went with the flow. I reasoned that BM is mostly fat and it has to come from the mother, so I just needed to have an extra supply  When DS started to eat more solids and cut back on BFs, I found my appetitate decreased and then the weight came off light magic. Took til about 18 months before we hit that point though...

Oh thank god there is more like me LOL!!
I actually have people saying oh but your breast feeding you should have lost the wieght!!
I have joined a gym and they have told me that I will take a bit longer to shed the wieght because my body is lactating and it will hold on to that fat because it has to look after the baby!! So even though I have lost they said if I lost too quickly my milk would dry up!!
I too put weight on with dd and then lost when I stopped feeding her and was preggars and had severe morning sickness!! I had 20kgs to loose from having my 2 in 18mnths!!
