I was just wondering, if anyone knew how many weeks old the youngest premmie ever to survive was?
My mum told me that one of the guy’s my dad went to high school with, His wife had a baby and she survived at 22 weeks old. Could this be seriously possible?
I’ve seen the diagrams of a 22 week old baby and I just cant imagine something that small surviving, Amazing if so though really!

It's so amazing to hear it! Wow.:)
It's a shame that they spend the last 20 weeks in an incubater,:( or well until they were well enough to survive on their own.

I know personally of a 23 weeker but have heard of a 22 weeker also. Some bubs are very lucky born that early, sadly the majority born that early are not :(

I can't imagine what it must be like having a premmie like that, at 21 weeks gestation with savannah they started preparing me for delivery as they didnt think I'd last much longer, they walked me around and showed me all the extreme premmies and talked to me about some problems I could expect if bubs did survive, that was terrible enough. Amazingly we defied all the odds and she was my first fullterm baby... thank GOD.

Hi there...
I have also heard of a bub surviving at 22 weeks, but while i was pregnant with dd2 i went into labour at 22 wks only to be told that they could do nothing for my baby if i was to give birth  Even though they had a level 3 nicu?... I think its fantastic what modern day technology can provide!

It's great to hear of these positive stories. I know someone who went in to labout at 24 weeks. The baby survived barely but had all sorts of problems and disabilities and no real quality of life. Sometimes I think you have to ask the question whether it is best to let nature take it's course?

These stories are very encoraging. Friends of mine gave birth to their little boy at 23 weeks but unfortuanty he didn't survive long after birth . they are currently 21 weeks and once again she has gone into premature labour, thankfully they have stopped it now but I hope and pray that their little one stays put for a while longer to give the baby a better chance.

All these tiny prems are just amazing

Hi all
Our DD2 was born at 23 weeks, she is now 2 1/2 and its fine, no problems at all. The dr's told us that there was about a 1% chance that she would survive without having severe disabilities or being deaf/blind. But she is a strong little fighter.
I was induced due to an infection and my placenta tearing and was in labour for 3 days and they said the method the used for inducing me was not at all baby friendly and with that and being in labour for so long there was no chance she would be alive. Guess she was just stubborn

Zachs almost 4 now and was 9 weeks early.. he has growth and weight gain issues still and a few other fairly minor health issues relating to his prematurity. He's had developmental issues as well but seems to have caught up now.

they can do amazing things for premmies!

At the hosp i was set to deliver DD2 I was told that they gave no chance of survival at that hospital until 23 weeks.

I have never heard of 19 weekers surviving, ill have to go google that one for more info as that is miraculous! They'd have to be in guiness world records for sure lol

OMG wow that is incredible. How was their quality of life?

all of them were doing quite well as it showed up until they were 6 months old.. the story was on discovery health channel.. it was a couple in America.

only one of the boys had problems.. not heaps bad.. just had problems focusing on things.. and was just going to be a little bit of a slow learner.

Chronicling the Derks' family's first year of life with quintuplets, follow the day-to-day challenges of rearing five infants simultaneously. Help from the local community with donations of clothes, food and volunteers help to keep this family strong.

According to the Discovery Channel website, show times will be:

Charmzy - from what I remember the smallest was (about) 1lb 8oz, I know the biggest was at least 2lb.
Jeez, and I thought my 4lb baby was tiny!

I'm pretty sure the record is under 20 weeks.
When my friend had an abortion at 20 weeks my mum was really upset to hear, as she new of babies that had been born before that mark, So she was extremely shaken up over it.:(

my sister had her baby at 20 weeks and he was the youngest baby {at that time not sure now} to live as long as he did he lived 9 an a half days and was proving the docs wrong every time they said he was not going to make it he had to under go so many operations as his lungs heart and other organs were not fully developed he was smaller than the size of ur hand and weight less than a small tub of butter, but sadly the docs stuffted up one of the ops on his heart and put a hole in it that was not able to be fixed, :crying: , i think all premmies are little fighters..

*sweet dreams tyler our little angel*

:( That is so sad, i'm so sorry. I still can't believe he survived as long as he did.
I think we've all seen the diagrams/pictures of what size babies are as our weeks progress, and a 20 week old baby is only the size of your hand.
So it really is amazing to even think that something that small can survive.

My DD was very tiny. Only 1lb 2oz which is 513gms. It was hard to believe that she could survive being that small. My hubby's wedding ring went right over her leg right up to her groin with still some room to spare. Her legs and arms were just a bit thicker than pencils. The hospital gave us pics of her hand and footprints and even now i cant believe how small they were. She was just abit bigger than my hand, we have a photo of her next to my hand and she is almost the same size.
Definately amazing how much they can do for premmies when they are so small.

my son zacoria was a 26 weeker
i went into labour and had a hind water rupture at 24 1/2 weeks and womans n childrens hospital didnt pick it up.. and 10 days later i went into full blown labour.. after 12 hours of labour and an emergency ambulance transfer to flinders hospital i have birth by emergency c section at 26 weeks and we spent 12 weeks in flinders neo natal unit in 2002 it was the scariest time of my life to date

he was born "dead" (Blue, not breathing) and they bought him back and put him on life support he weighed in at 1610g at birth and by the next day he was 900g.
he was so tiny
he was born with double pmnonia (in both lungs) as well as a major infection due to the amniotic fluid being completely infected when my waters ruptured .. i have pictures of zac.. he was so tiny.. we have this tiny little teddy that we took a photo of it next to zac.. and the teddies head was as big as zacs..
zacoria is now 4 3/4 and doing really well.. considering.. he does have delays.. especially in gross motor and speech.. but the fact he is healthy and alive.. I AM HAPPY.

WITH my second son emmanuel i went into labour at 21 weeks but with drugs and a one week stay in hospital, i managed to keep him in till 38 weeks when i had a c section.
and luckily i did.. as my uterous was rupturing internally .

if you want to know more info.. just ask me

My DD3 was born at 26 weeks in May 2000.

She was 986grams, and dropped to 611grams in 4 days.

It was a 5 month struggle in NICU, 3 months in Special Care, and a further 4 months of home nursing and oxygen at home.

Aimee is now a healthy, happy 6 year old little girl with few traces of her early arrival.

In the NICU we met a couple whose bubba was born at 22.5 weeks, and it was amazing to watch him grow.

When my DS was born at 33 weeks in 2003, we met a family who had a little girl who was 300grams!!!! You see it all at Royal Hospital for Women, Randwick!

My little one was born 26 weeks 550 gram 30cm on 22nd Feb 2006.

She dropped to 475grams after birth.

Home 6th June on oxygen.
All scans on the brain showed no bleeds and looked normal.
Ears and eyes are fine.
She is developing very well and is very alert.
Now only 4 kgs and some issues with reflux and feeding also now on nasal gastic tube to assist in feeds. On hardly any oxygen and this should go very soon.

*There was a little guy in the same unit in hospital born 22 weeks. Few issues health wise but I believe he is doing fine.

It's incredible what these little people are capable of and their will to fight and live.

Hi all..first time poster here.

My daughter gave birth to a 19 week 5 day old little girl...(Jessie) this was her first baby.
Jessie lived for 4hours 20mins.....
I was wondering in this case...should a Dr be present at birth? as the Dr came in 20 mins after Jessie was born.
Also there was only 1 midwife....
Jessie was moving and breathing, but asked Beck to basicaly monitor her.. she passed at 6am
My daughter Becky(21) and her partner are really broken at this time...and need help to cope with their loss.
I hope this is the right area to post in
Thanks in advance
Wendi

Hi Wendy and Welcome:hugs: I'm so sorry to hear about your daughters loss (and your's too, i'm sure). I don't have any help or advice to give you but i just wanted to add something. One of our friends recently gave birth at 22 weeks and there was no doctor there whatsoever, and the midwife was acting as though it was no big deal. Our friend asked how much chance his daughter had of surviving and the midwife just replied with a smile " Oh No! She won't survive this early! Ha!" Could not believe it! I would be ropable if that happened to me! So needless to say, she didn't survive the day.

Also, just to add - my SIL (my brothers wife) gave birth to their identical twin boys at 22 weeks also. The hospital made no effort to help them or anything. Admittedly this was 14 years ago... Mark and Miles lived around the 4-6 hour mark. They were so tiny... My brother has pics of them next to a rose - the flower was bigger than their heads... So sad...
