View Full Version : Can Bum Wipes cause Nappy Rash?
This may be a really dopey question :o but I'll ask anyway! Since DD was born I've used the plain J & J bum wipes and they were fine. I bought the Huggies wipes on recommendation from a friend but DH didn't like them as he thought they were too dry. The last packet I bought was the J & J with the 'special protective cream' green stripes. Well after a couple of days use, DD has a horrible, weeping nappy rash. She's never had nappy rash before.
Do you think its just a coincidence and she would have got it anyway or could it be these wipes? Seems a bit strange since they're supposed to protect against nappy rash:detective:
Thanks.

Hi yes they contain lots of nasties and drying chemicals so I wouldnt be surprised if they did. No wonder your poor bub got a rash on her gorgeous sensitive skin.
Most wipes have bad stuff but you can get some nice ones called seventh generation from websites etc.
I just use warm water and flannel wipes or cotton wool.

In one word-YES. Wipes are full of all sorts of chemicals and the claims that they can protect against nappy rash have me completely baffled. More marketing strategies, I expect.
I know it may take a bit more work, but what about making your own cloth wipes. I cut up a square of double muslin and hemmed it and just grab one and wet it on my way to the change table. Then you can wash them as you would nappies. or just plain old face washers do the trick too.
If this is why she has a rash then it should disappear within a day or two-if it doesn't then you may need to lookat using a cream of sorts. A nice cocoa butter based one shouldn't aggravate the rash.
All the best!:)

I found certain brands caused more dramas than others so i guess depending on how sensitive your bubs is they can yes.
We use cheap facewashers here they grab all the poo with no dramas & it only takes one facewasher rather than sixty million wipes ( yes slight exaggeration :p ).
But then we use cloth so that helps with the washing but you can always throw them in with your towels after you rinse them

Hi
yes it would more than likely be those wipes, they dont agree with my son either. It is trial and error when it comes to wipes. I used to love curash wipes on my oldest so bought them when i had my second child, but for him they caused nappy rash as they were too moist so i use j and j.
I tried them all, and the best ones I used and still use is the Amolin wipes
I cut up some Chux wipes and use with water.
I read on here once using chamomile tea is good- must try it soon.

Yep. Ella is allergic to wipes. The only ones I can use on her are Huggies sensative ones and thats only for a limited amount of time. If I use them for more than a couple of days straight she gets terrible rash. So I just use washers & water & throw them in when I wash the nappies. I only use the huggies ones when we are out.

I have never been able to use Huggies wipes on my DD. Even the sensitive ones give her a shocking rash.
When she was newborn we used either a damp cloth or cotton bud, then switched to the Target brand fragrance free wipes (so gentle!), then as she got much older we switched to J+J wipes.
Thanks guys, you've certainly given me something to think about - I might go with the cloths/face washer, I never really thought about the chemicals they put in those things - duh...
Jessica from Day 1 couldn't use J&J, Anolin or Huggies baby wipes. It caused her to break out in a rash and poor bubba used to scream blue murder if you used it. We then got the idea of using water and cut up chux and then one of my friends recommended cammile tea diluted and it worked. She know is able to use Woolworths Brand Little Wishes brand wipes and causes her no problems. If we use a wipe to wipe her face and nose she breaks out in a rash on her face. Also aloe vera tissues do damage to her face too
