Hi Mums,
I am a first time mum of 6 days and was wondering if it is safe to let the bub fall to sleep with a dummy in his mouth.
Do I have to take it out when he is asleep? is there a risk of it being in the cot with him? I am unsure of the SIDS guidlines on this.
It would be so nice to just put the dummy in and go to sleep without worrying something horrible will happen:freakingout:.
Any advice would be so amazing. Thank you in advance
My DS had his dummy since about then. They can't swallow it and it falls out when they sleep. My DS is just over 2 and still sleeps with his.

My first slept with a dummy for 16 months, but that didn't stop me from worrying about letting my new bub sleep with hers all over again.
The official word is no, bubs should only have it under supervision, but i think as kind as you check them every time you steralise them you will be fine. As far as SIDS go, I don't think there's an issue (in fact I have heard of a/some research from the us that shows them to be beneficial), the only issue is it breaking and becoming a choking hazard (and obviously all the other issues that go with dummy use, ie interfering with bf, having to wean them from it later).
Just a drop in the ocean of things us mums worry about, hey :)
(I'd say, don't worry too much, if you can take it without disturbing bub, fantastic! If not, don't worry)

if you google SIDS and Dummies there is a lot of information.
There was a study in 2007 that indicated that using a dummy may in fact reduce the risk of SIDS however the actual SIDS & KIDS organisation does not make a recommendation one way or other, it simply states: Until there is more conclusive evidence about dummies being protective for SIDS, SIDS and Kids makes no recommendation about dummy use at this stage.
FWIW both of my children have dummies to go to sleep and they usually fall out pretty much straight away...which in turn can be a pain because they go through a stage of wanting it to be put back in to back to sleep if they wake up through the night.
I'm hoping to wean DD2 (she is 14 weeks) off hers before she turns one. DD1 is 2.5 y/o and still loves her dummy and I have no idea how we are going to wean her off it.
Congrats on your new bub. Enjoy him, its such a beautiful time.

I have the same problem with DS. I just remind myself that no kid has gone to school with a dummy and no one has said I do with a dummy so there is hope

Thanks so much everyone for the speedy replies, I really appreciate it :hugs:
One more question: So if the dummy falls out in the bassinet at night time, and I am sleeping so cant remove it, can it stay there till the morning with no problems? I couldn't see anything anywhere on the net about it.
thanks so much again in advance, I don't know what I would do without you girls!!

DD used to spit her dummy out all the time..I never worried about taking it out of the bassinet. It never worried her, many times I would find her with it in her ear, stuck to her cheek..lol. If I was awake I'd move it to somewhere where I could find it otherwise it would stay wherever it landed. Sleep is too precious!!

I just used to leave it, though DD slept in a cot, which was considerably bigger. I personally don't think it's a problem, and it never got in her way. The only time it became a problem was when she would wake up because it was no longer in her mouth!!!
