After four hours of labor and only 10 minutes of pushing, Amanda Byron, 21, delivered her first child, Jonathan Patrick Rozzi, Thursday morning at Holy Family Hospital in Methuen. Weighing a healthy 13 pounds 2 ounces, and 22 inches long — the big bundle of joy came as a surprise to everyone.
“When they told me his weight I didn’t realize how big a deal this was until everyone started taking pictures,” Byron told the Herald before she left the hospital yesterday.
“The doctor said it’s the biggest she’s delivered naturally, and the nurses were all so surprised at his size. I was told the last big baby was 12 pounds but that was a C-section,” she said. “Everyone’s asking me ‘How did you do it?’ It wasn’t as much pain as I thought it would be. So I just smile and shrug.”
Although baby Rozzi didn’t break any records — Guinness World Records lists a baby as big as 22 pounds, 8 ounces, born in 1955, in Italy — Byron knew to expect a bigger-than-average-sized baby from early ultrasound readings.
“We thought maybe 9 or 10 pounds, and that the average size is 6 to 8 pounds. They don’t know why he’s so big. I had a normal, well-balanced diet — avoided caffeine and sodas,” said Byron adding that big genes are not prominent either her family or that of her fiance, Eric Rozzi.
“(Jonathan) cried when he came out, but for the most part he’s a quiet baby. Definitely a cuddler,” she said.
Byron was released with orders to avoid heavy lifting — including Jonathan in a carrier. Family members have already blessed the boy with such nicknames as Big Baby and Sumo Wrestler, said mom, who’s happy that she can get back into her jeans.
“So far he’s eating a normal amount of food, but I got a lot of support from family. I’m looking forward to motherhood.”

His parents were surprised, as they were told at their last doctor’s visit that their baby boy would likely weigh in at about nine or 10 pounds.
