My little girl is five months old and has gradually had formula introduced since she was four months old (I still breastfeed morning and night but plan to wean her completely from the breast at six months). For the past week and a half she has been vomiting, not excessive amounts but fairly consistently and definately after a bottle sometimes it is even projectile. She hasn't been a very spewy baby until now just the normal possiting that all young babies have. The daycare suggested that she may be lactose intolerant as this apparently takes about a month to surface and that is how long she has been on the formula. Her poo is dark green and lumpy but I had put this down to the introduction of solid food which she has had in the last month also. Apart from the vomiting she is happy and active, should I be concerned? Should I put her on a lactose free formula to see what happens?

My son is lactose intolerant also. The big thing to remember is that kids seem to react in different ways. It is possible that your child is lactose intolerant and really the best way of testing it is to change formula and see if it makes a difference. With my son I noticed the difference within 12 hours. Talk to your doctor about your concerns though - they may actually want to test to make sure.
Oh and for the record I used S26 lactose free formula and it was great

Just on the off chance that you're doing this, I thought I'd mention it. I bottle fed my DD and found that whenever I encouraged her to just have a few more ml of formula after she first pushed it away, it usually caused her to throw the whole lot back up at me. She knew when she was full, I ignored it and paid the price. So maybe it's not lactose intolerance causing the vomitting but something with the bottle, although with the poo you're describing I'm not really sure.

Dear Coriander,
If you have noticed any significant changes in your baby’s bowel motions (such as it being dark and green) it should be discussed with your doctor. A lactose intolerance is possible, but it is also possible that she may be having a reaction to a new food she is now eating, or even a change in your own diet / medications if you are still breastfeeding.
While it is recommended that you seek medical advice about this issue, it may be useful to trial your bub with the lactose free formula, and to give her only one type of food for a day or two at a time, to see how things change.
