I have an allergy or intolerance to dairy. Nit sure which but I gets the runs and stomach cramps is I have dairy and have had naturopath allergy testing. I have found ds gets sick if I have any dairy (when I was being naughty) and if he has dairy. He gets the runs, a nasty rash and an upset tummy. I have stopped all dairy but have just started soy for the last week - just in his cereal as I am bfing so haven't used soy formula. He seemed happy with a slight rash. I then gave soy yoghurt and the rash got worse and poo pretty runny again. Not sure whether to continue soy or what to do? Any suggestions?

Not sure if I will be a big help but. My DD just turned 11 months and has a cows milk, eggs and almond allergy (skin prick testing).
Her paed said to do a cows milk challenge test.

Try do it early in the morning so if there is a reaction you have all day to see the effects.

1. smother some milk onto babies hand. wait for a reaction (10-15mins) if no reaction then
2. smother milk around and on babies mouth. wait for reaction (10-15mins) if no reaction then
3. give baby a tablespoon of milk, wait for reaction again (10-15mins) if no reaction give baby 10ml every few mins and see if he/she have a reaction in a few hours.

note: dont take ur eyes away when u do the testing on the skin, sometimes they react within seconds but then 5mins later it's gone (happens to DD with bread!!) So best to keep a very close eye on them when testing.

I hope this helps...

Stoopid allergies :(

Thanks for the reply! It's is all such a nuisance for us and poor bubs. If there is no reaction but tummy ache and runs later on is that an allergy or intolerance? Will have to look into it more and have a go one day.

it can be hard to tell if its an allergy or intolerance unless they test to see it the immune system is involved (allergy). Dd1 is obviously allergic as she gets histamine-type welts and swelling on her face when she has dairy, and skin prick tests show a reaction. Dd2 is prob just intolerant as she can have some dairy without showing any reaction, but give her a certain amount and she gets an upset tummy etc. We haven't done skin pricks on dd2.

I would say stay off dairy and soy, i have read on here before it can take a month to get out of bub's system if you are bfing. Rice milk and oat milk, nuttelex etc. Are good substitutes, but you prob know what to eat already. It also might be worth keeping a diary of what you both eat, and symptoms/reactions, so you can show it to a gp or paed if you need to.
