View Full Version : Are Asian babies born with a mark on their bum

This question may seem unusual. I come from Africa and when some black babies are born they have a blue mark coming from their anus and across the top of their bums.

Last week I was baby sitting my neighbors son. The boys decided to play on my sons wading pool so I stripped them down and noticed this childs bum was blue. Now people can do terrible things but I find it hard to believe that anything bad is happening next door. I didn't want to ask the mom in case she stopped her son from playing.

Could this be a birthing issue as it didn't seem sore to the touch or would this be something to worry about.

I am no expert so don't take my word for it but it sounds like it's a birth thing. My son has that same mark on his bum. It's not as big but he is a half cast. You would think if it was that big and a bruise then it would probably hurt. If in doubt you could always call someone

It looks like it could be a mongolian blue spot, common in babies in asian descent. They appear at birth, and generally fade off as bub grows older.

My son has one too but the funny thing is there is no Asian or African in either families, we are of anglosaxon heritage, it's very unusual in white babies I've been told.

DD had one when she was born, and it faded over time. It was quite big in relation to the size of her little cute bottom. (And yes, she is part Asian).

My boys had it too when they were born but it faded. They are mixed with african-american. DD didn't have it though.

Yep I'm half Asian and I have one just above my coccyk (?) bone, it's extremely faint now though and u wouldn't notice it unless u stared. I have a picture though of my mum bathing me as a NB and it was quite purply/red.

Mine have it too :) I kept thinking they had fallen on their bottoms or something and bruised themselves, I was worried people would start to think I hurt them or something.
Then I came on here one night and found out it was normal for darker skinned babies/children, boy was I relieved lol, I hated thinking that the kids had permanent bruises on their bottoms.

I had one when I was born. I'm part Maori. DS didn't though, just a very hairy crack and back. We were most concerned but it fell out on time lol.

I wish there was more awareness about this. I had no idea until I saw it on DD and the health nurse told me what it was. I would hate someone to think I did it :(

I completely agree with you. I would be devastated if someone thought i did that to DS

Yep, my DD is half Asian/Lebanese. Massive blue Mongolian spot on her a**. Looked liked she had coped a hiding or two...

By age five it was gone :)

Or...... the child could have bumped themselves/fallen over and gotten a bruise through purely innocent circumstances? I don't know why it always has to be assumed that the parents are abusive.

But yes I do agree with PP's that it sounds like a Mongolian spot.

:iagree: with Cmf, while concern and vigilance is good Jasoer at around 1 year ran around the corner of the hallway, tripped and hit the corner of the coffee table right below his eye and had a full on shocking black eye for weeks! And I copped the constant 'omg! What happened to him!' shocked expression to me. My dp got that question with a suspicious look and without batting an eyelid dp answered 'I kicked him in the head' - okay sure, bad answer honey! But seriously we were both a bit over the looks and comments.

Though I had lots of *knowing* looks and smirks from mums with toddlers, particularly boy toddlers!

My DD1 has one MCHN pointed it out to me but have no idea of what background it could have come from other than DHs mum as she is adopted we dont know her history

Yep, it's normal. Not all kids of asian descent will have them but most will. Some are large, some quite small. Both of my kids have them.

My DD had one, DS didn't. Both are part Asian but not a lot, and on DD I got questioned a few times since she's very pale with white blonde hair, so people couldn't 'see' her family history in that sense (if you did know you could see it, she looked almost albino as despite the hair/skin she had a very Asian face as a toddler, and very almond but blue eyes)

Your wish is my command :p

They are a bit hard to see (scanned) and not too sure how big you can make it on your screen but it gives you an idea :)

My dd has one of these. I'm an Aussie and dh is Irish. HOwever, in an old black and white picture, I can see one of my great great rellies is of a different origin but I don't know what and nobody who knew is alive today to ask. I can't believe my tiny whitey bummed girl has a blue mark on her bottom!

Just clarifying - it doesn't bother me at all but fascinates me hence the disbelief.

I find it quite fascinating and unusual too but as more people post I realise it may be more common than I thought.

Mimsie she is just gorgeous, so fair. I love half babies. I also love Asian men LOL that's why I married one :D

I find it really interesting too :)

My kids aren't half either, they are about 1/32 Chinese!! So it's a tiny portion of their overall genetic makeup. So I was surprised to see it in her but at the same time, if we photoshopped some of those pics to change her colouring she'd look perfectly like a Chinese bub so I guess she just got a good hit of the genetics there!

DS has one, it looks like he's been beaten across his backside and I've had several comments about it such as 'that wouldn't happen from just falling over'.

DH is 1/2 Maori, I'm 1/2 Lebanese.

They're called Mongolian Birthmarks. The only other kid I've seen with one is DHs cousins daughter who is the exact same age as DS, hers is even more vivid.

They normally fade with age.
