Has anyone experienced pain around their c-section scar during their second pregnancy?

I had an emergency c/s december 2004 and am now 6 months pregnant. Just the last few days i have been experiencing pain around the scar site-on and off pain-that makes me feel like my tummy is going to fall out. It also hurts to touch during this time. Has anyone else had similar experiences having a c-section for the first pregnancy and then pain during the second pregnancy?

I am not sure if the pain is related to the c/s but that is the area where the pain is. It doesnt feel like the normal ligament stretching pain it feels more like cutting pain.........................

Should I be calling the hospital incase something is wrong?

Hi and congratulations!

I have experienced pain around my c/section scar on and off throughout the whole pregnancy. Its been nothing severe though, mainly if I move too quickly or get in an awkward position. And apparently thats normal.

But only you can work out if the pain you feel is that severe that it needs looking at. If I were you Id maybe speak to your ob or midwife just for piece of mind. Its definately something not worth mucking around with if there is a problem.

Good luck!

Hi there,

If it is really worrying you then I would call your doc just to be on the safe side - a pregnant women can never ask too many questions!

I fell pregnant 15 weeks after I had a emergency c/s with my first, and I have had no problems at all with any associated pain around that area, only the normal ligament/muscle twangs and pangs as my boy gets bigger.

Good luck - let us know what the doc says.:)

hi,
i also had pain with my pregnancies in the scar area (had 3 c/s).
in my last, they measured my internal scar via u/s, as i had an uterus rup. with no.2- so i was really scared it was rupturing already during pregnancy.

what i had developed (but they didnīt see that until i lay there in the op and got my tummy cut open..) was a hernia in the old scar tissue. it was SOOO painful and, logically, the pain grew more, as the tummy grew bigger....

let them check it, if it is too painful. hernias are more common then you might think....

all the best

I had pain around my scar site when I was preg with No 2 and again but to a lesser extent with No3.

My OB told me it was nothing to worry about. He said that after a csec it is normal that there will be some adhesions where different layers of tissue (muscle layers, lower skin levels etc) have bits stuck to each other and as things grow these stretch and pull and obviously hurt because it can cause some micro tears. He said it was quite common.

I went on to have two successful VBACs, the first of which included 27hrs of labour.

I also had soreness around my c/sec scar during my subsequent pregnancies - but like TigerBlueBear said, this is not to do with the uterus....

When a uterine rupture occurs, there actually isnt any pain from the rupture site, it is the pain of the hemorage (sp?) and the baby and all the associated fluids etc trying to make it's way out of the rupture site.

I'd say it might be slight adhesions - this is what I was told was going on with me....went on to have a vb with DS4, so these pains (which I sometimes felt as sharp throbs) obviously all turned out to be no big deal

To be on the safe side i think i will go see my dr. Unfortunately my usual GP has just up and left on holidays without telling anyone and wont be back till January (After the baby) so i will have to see "anyone" at the medical centre.

Its either that or visit the maternity unit at the hospital and get them to check it......which i might do cos i am also getting headaches so i might need my blood pressure checked.

I think its probably nothing. I do have a dermoid ovarian cyst (which is going to be removed during the 2nd c-section) and that could be causing the pain.........but i want to get it checked to be safe than sorry.

The pain is worrying me a bit because it feels like a knife cutting me at times and it comes and goes and at the same time i have been getting a bit of a back ache and vaginal pain.....................

I feel silly worrying like this when its probably nothing cos the bub is fine (can feel her moving constantly)...........

follow your instincts and get checked by your GP/hospital.....

even the most radical homebirthing hippies go to the Dr when they have an 'instinct' about something negative in their pregnancy/birth....:D

(not that I'm one of them - I'm a homebirthing bankers wife  )

LOL becca74!!! (I hate being "negative" but my family hasnt had a good track record with pregnancies in the last 12 months so im worried a bit. My BIL's partner lost her bubba at 19 weeks due to illness and my sister had her twins early at 27 weeks due to complications so i think this time i am over worried-add that to my past pregnancy problems and you have one very concerned mumma!!)

Now i just have to try and get there (to the dr). I am too sick with m/s to drive safely and DH is on shift work so it could be a few days before i can even get into the drs (and they dont do appointments its first come first served).........maybe i should ring the maternity ward and ask them if its cause for concern-they are usually nice to me when i ring

hi i have never experienced any pain at all with any of my pregs after c sections even after 4 c sections i still have no site pai, perhaps you have a lot of scar tissue and with the growing preg it is pushing on it which is causing the pain. I would get it checked because if you are having pain there now they will not even attempt a vbac so better to be safe then sorry.

I rang the midwives at my hospital and they told me it was nothing and just to take panadol and i will be fine........they practically told me that they wouldnt even do anything if i go in and see them about it because "its nothing"..........but im still scared

not exactly true - as I had pain there and have had straightforward vbacs....

I dont think Clare is going for a vbac though.....

i was advised with all of my pregs if i had any pain on the site then i was to getto either a hospital or dr and go for a scan to see what could be causing it

Dammit i want your hospital or dr or whoever said that!!!! I dont know why i get stuck with midwives that dont care!!! My mum went to a nice GP last night and asked if she would see me and she said yes (since my hospital sucks and my GP up and left on 6 months leave).............my sister thinks i might have adhesions that are pulling but i really want to be sure............
