Hi,
My DS is 9 weeks old and currently on S26gold. He suffers from eczema and the pediatrician recommended that I change him to Nan1HA Gold.
However my maternal health nurse does not agree with this and says that it will not make a difference as I did not use it in the first place.

Just interested to see if anyone has changed to Nan for eczema reason.
I dont want to upset him...not even sure if he will know the difference

Thanks

I don;t know if it will make the ecsma better or not, but I would take the word of a paed over a nurse anyday. But we have THE best paed I have ever known, so his word is basically bible to us.

We changed to Nan 1 HA gold when DS was diagnosed with eczema - it's supposed to be a low-allergenic formula for bubs who suffer from allergies, asthma, hayfever, eczema etc

Made no difference to DS - pharmacist suggested the change due to the fact that kids with eczema are '...generally allergic to other things....' - more for dietary reasons, not for eczema reasons.

My son had some eczma in the elbow and knee creases when I started giving him top up feeds on s26gold. when I gave him a full feed he had an allergic reaction (red rash all over). We changed him to soya formula and that has made a huge difference. he still gets eczma but nothing like the reaction.

So it is possible he might have a slight cows milk intolerance.

I had a premmie baby. It was recommended by the CHN at the time to give her Nan as a supplement. She also gave me very dodgy advice about breastfeeding, but that is a totally different story.

I agree with Lunar, go with the paed instead of the CHN. I have always found them to be barren, bitter ladies (but that is only my opinion and experience).

Hi guys,

I had our tiny man on S26 (not the gold though) after he stopped breastfeeding at 4 1/2 months. He came out with a red raised rash on his chest almost to the day that he started formula full time. I changed him over to goats milk formula after he was allergy tested and came up with a cows milk allergy. It's still there and tends to flare up if he's really hot or dribbling heaps but changing to the goats definitely helped!

At the moment both the paed and the health nurse are speculating what the cause of the ezcema is.
It is actually better to go to a dermatologist and find out exactly what the trigger is. We have seen a dermatologist who works in the children's clinic at the children's hospital, and he told us that food intollerance and allergy is lower on the list of triggers for ezcema.

I can say nan ha helped a bit with ridding the eczema but i can't say it was the only prevention as there are other triggers. the paeditrician dermatologist i saw at westmead recommended i stay on it just to be safe as this formula is much better than the one i began with, which was karicare gold. i did try soy and since reading about it from my own research i decided to stop giving it to her. the naturopath i sawalso said not to give her soy formula as it may not have all the nutrients a baby needs. I also found it very salty, whereas nan ha is slightly bitter. I'd rather DD gets a taste for bitter food than salty foods. and as DD is happy with nan ha, i'll keep using that.

Thanks to all for the replies. I decided to listen to the ped and it has been over a month since then......he has improved. But having said that, i now dress him in 100% cotton clothing, have removed the wool underlay in the basinette, use Dermaveen oil in bath & moisturise him at least twice a day with Dermaveen lotion. It stops the itchiness & redness. He still flares up when it's hot but not like before.

Hi there,

My Noah gets eczema too, and he was on S26 gold from 4 1/2 months old, and he had eczema before he stopped breastfeeding. Most eczema is topical rather then from food allergies. Saying that though just be careful when the time comes to start solids. Sounds like you are doing a great job keeping it under control, may I suggest the QV kids balm though for the really bad spots, it seems to work wonders for my Noah. And we coat him in hydraderm Sorbelene cream from the tub after his bath, and that is a really nice thick cream that keeps his skin really moist.

Hi Everyone!

I have found it very interesting reading through all your posts! My DD has developed an icky, pimply, flaky rash on her face that just wont seem to budge! So I have been searching :detective: for a solution.
I thought I would share a few thoughts- agree with you all that J&J is pure evil! It has been banned from our place since DD was about 2 months old. I have ordered some organic cotton cot sheets for DD, as well as organic cotton singlets. Since I received the singlets, the small amount of rash on her chest has disappeared! Hoping for the same effect for her face when the new sheets arrive... my DD is a chronic drooler, so I think that, combined with the non-organic sheets, and the washing powder I have been using might be the problem. (because she drools on her pillow and then sleeps in it) While I was searching I came across a website citing the evils of chlorine in town water- apparently it has pretty much the same chlorine content as the typical backyard pool!:barf: Scray thought isnt it? They say it is worse to bathe in than drink, because the warm water vapourises the chlorine so you are breathing it in, and the warm water opens the pores of your skin, so your skin is drinking it in too! You are able to buy attatchments for your bath to filter the water apparently (although I cant find any in brisbane, one fellow from a filter place reckons he could rigg something up for me using one of the shower filters) If you dont want to do that, you could try letting the water sit for a day or 2 & then boil some of that water to make the water warm for bub. This would be okay for anyone still using a baby bath! It may help- I will let you know how we go with our filter when we get it!
I have just been given some dermaveen samples from one of my lovely neighbours:hugs: I tried the shower and bath oil last night and this morning, and it seems to be helping already (fingers crossed we have found a solution!!!) If not I will be trying the gaia products that everyone seems to be recommending! For those who have not been able to track down their products, they can be mail ordered- see www.gaiaskinnaturals.com (http://www.gaiaskinnaturals.com)- and you dont have to use a credit card, you can direct deposit or send money order. Also, there is a store on ebay that sells some of the gaia range- just search gaia under baby and maternity. Hope this is helpful to someone, and sorry for the rambling!
Cheers, laurasmummy
