View Full Version : Cows Milk
Hi ,
i waswondering if any one could tell me if its ok to make custard using cows milk for a 7 month old . I thought i read some where that if the milk is cooked it will break down the proteins so that the baby can digest them properly.
I have no idea where i got the info from but can anyone help??????

I don't know about breaking down the proteins but I believe that it is okay to make most food for babies over 6 months with cow's milk. I base that on the advice in Robin Barker's "Baby Love" and on advice from my paediatrician who told me that if they do have an allergy to cow's milk protein we would know about it before she gets to the stage of eating solids as it is passed through breast milk.
My understanding is that drinking large amounts of cow's milk is not recommended until 12 months but that mixing it in food etc is okay. And things like yoghurt and cheese are fine for the same reasons.
As far as I know it is ok to start from around 6 months of age ... as long as the milk has been cooked.
I used it for both of my children and I haven't seen any ill effects yet. Many children are having yoghurt, cheese, fromage frais etc at this age and they are fine.

We introduced custard at about 6 months and our son projectile vomitted every where  that was how we discovered his allergy to eggs and milk :p
Give it a try and see what happens, if your bub's allergic you'll soon know it.

I too have just started my LO on solids and tried weetbix with milk on them as per Robin Barkers book but unfortunately after the first time Will came out with a rash on his face and then after the second time came out with hives where the milk had touched on his face (nowhere else on his body) and I have since been told if your child has an allergy each time they are exposed to the irritant the reaction will only get worse. I have also tried the weetbix with formula but that gave him hives also. To top all of this off I have now been told he shouldn't be give weetbix before he is around 9 months!! You would think this being my 2nd child it would be easier but I think now it's getting harder as there is such conflicting advice out there!!
All of this said if your LO doesn't have a reaction to milk you are safe to put it into food just don't give it as a full drink until after they are one year.
Good luck!
thank you to everyone for there replies,
there is so much conflicting information you dont know what to believe and what not to i will defenetly try her on the custard. You all now what its like you dont want to do anything that would harm your child
Thanks again Mel
