Hi,
My nearly 4 year old will stand to do a wee but my 2 year old is still too small to reach to stand unless he is standing on something which I found dosnt work very well. I think sitting is easier in the beginning but if your son is tall enough he may prefer to stand. I don't think it really matters much. I just like it when they actually manage to get it in the toilet instead of overshooting and getting it on the floor.
Same as Caroline said, if they are tall enough, then they can stand, otherwise sitting is fine. My nephew went straight to standing, i thought it was gorgeous, I always assumed boys were taught to sit first, I don't know why.

Hi Jenny,
Just noticed our boys were born on the same day only a year apart :D
Were going to start toileting this summer too as DS is very interested in what daddy does in the bathroom :p I'm thinking of getting one of those little potty's and I've heard its easier (if there little) to get them to sit first, then progress to standing when their toilet trained. However if your son is tall enough I'd go with standing, get daddy to help role model :) . DH wants to remove our spare toilet in the laundry and replace it with a little toilet (you know the kind you'd find in day care centre) I think its a cute idea but too much work!
Were also going to go cold turkey-no pull ups just undies after he starts getting the idea as have been told children just confuse nappies with pull ups, I was told they learn quicker using this approach, has any one else heard this? is it true?. Of course undies will only be used at home, nappies at night and when we go out, which might be just as confusing huh  .
My 2.5yr old son has finally started showing interest in using the toilet :D We are teaching him to go sitting down for now, all the little boys at daycare go sitting down too. Once he gets the hang of things, and grows a bit taller, his daddy can show him how to wee standing up.
On the nappy/pull-ups/undies thing, DS wears undies at home most of the time, nappies for sleep and, once I get to the shops, he will be wearing pull-ups when we go out. Hopefully he gets the hang of it all soon so we don't need pull-ups...they are pretty expensive.

My eldest son started by sitting with a seat insert on the big toilet. I wanted to avoid potties! After a while he graduated to standing. Our second son started standing straight away - no sitting for him. He was adamant. He stood on a stool to start with and now is tall enough to stand on the floor. I think he just learnt to stand straight away because that is what his dad and big brother were doing. Will was toilet trained by 2 and a half and Julian by 2 and three quarters. I think we were pretty lucky. They were both fairly easy to train. I think just go with what works for you and your son.

I agree with the "sit first - stand later" policy!
The only tip I have is to teach them to make sure thier "little man (iykwim)" is pointing downwards at all times while sitting!
When my boy is a bit older I will ask my dh to spend the day with him exclusively teaching him the finer points of standing and aiming.
WE went with the sitting first standing later - coming from a family of the height-challenged type! :D
Were also going to go cold turkey-no pull ups just undies after he starts getting the idea as have been told children just confuse nappies with pull ups, I was told they learn quicker using this approach, has any one else heard this? is it true?. Of course undies will only be used at home, nappies at night and when we go out, which might be just as confusing.
Our now 5 yr old really 'trained' himself. Not long after he made it known that he wanted to, and could, use the toilet [ the 'big' toilet, on a smaller seat with a step up attached] we discovered that NO pants/nappies was the way to go for him. At home he would always use the toilet if he was naked from the waist down :D but would have accidents if he had his jocks on. We always put a nappy on him when we went out, and I can't quite remember if we had many accidents then
I DO know that I found it quite 'annoying' to have to be able to find a public toilet at a minute's notice, once he was using the toilet, so it's not all bad being in nappies!! ;)

My 4 year old, has been fully day and night toilet trained for well over a year now, and he always sits. We tried standing, but I got tired of cleaning up the misfires. He will be sitting until he learns how to clean for himself. :D
He also used to undress from the waist down to go to the toilet, this was particularly annoying in public toilets. It has only been in the last couple of months that he has mangaged to go without undressing. :)

Thanks alot everyone i really appreciate advise, especially when your going thru the whole toilet training as well! I think ill just put my "L" plates up and give it a go. Im sure theres going be alot of "misfires", but hopefully in the end it will pay off! After that im going to teach him to put the toilet seat down when he`s finish, as i HATE when the toliet seat gets left up, especially when we go for a nightly trip to the loo!
Hey Jen,
Connor has always stood to do wee, as when he sat it kind of shot out the front and onto the floor. We had him go outside on the tree the first few times for aiming practice! Its funny, he does his business and then gives it a jiggle like a man would.
He still uses a seat thing over the toilet bowl to do poo.

Hi,
I have three boys and I started them off sitting because I found that easier because of their height. My oldest two gradually as they got taller decided that they were going to stand up and do it. My third son is only starting to use the toilet now and he has a seat with a step attached and he sits on it.
