 Ladies

I'm currently 25 weeks pregnant and I'm due to have my GD GTT. I have the pathology request in my hot little hands it's just a matter of finding the time to do it.

For a little while now my urine has had a sweet smell to it so of course I consult the ever so qualified Dr Google who instantly frightens the bejesus out of me with the "diabetes" diagnosis.

So of course now I'm :freakingout:! There is diabetes in my family. My grandfather was insulin dependant and all my older aunts including my mother have it as well but it is controlled with meds rather than insulin. So I know I'm more "prone" to it because of family history and I kind of expect to get it in later life.

So for those who have been diagnosed with GD. Did you know before you had your GTT done and what were your symptoms that made you think you had it and turned out to be correct? I have had 2 children previously and had no problems with those pregnancies but that was almost 10 years ago now.

Hi Caliresmum

No i never had it with my other 2. I'm thinking I'll have mine done on Monday as I have another OB appointment on the 6th and she wanted it done before we went back.

I didn't have any symptoms as such, just a gut feeling. I didn't get it with my DS, so not too sure I was lucky enough to get it this time.

GD for me is a real pain, especially now I'm on insulin. So much to remember.

How did you go with your tests??

Hi, I had gd with my 3rd bub but not the others. I was on insulin from around 30 weeks and even with it and a strict diet it was never really controlled. I had no symptoms at all when I was diagnosed, I had barely put on any weight and bub was not huge when he was born. Just over 8 pounds the same as my other babies.
Good luck

Hi Ladies

Thank you all for your replies.

ILovePink - Being on insulin doesn't bother me as going through IVF and jabbing here, there and everywhere I'm used to it lol. I'm a bit worried though beacuse it could mean that I am more likely to get it in later life even more so with my family history but in saying that I'm not overweight like my family is. I had the GTT done yesterday and results will be in tomorrow but I'm not seeing my OB until next Thursday. I guess if it's bad they will call me???

Threeofthem - I've barely put on any weight either. I've only gained about 2.5kg. I'm apparently 2kg under weight according to an on line calculator. My previous babies were around the 6 pound mark so I'm not expecting a big baby anyway.

I found out last Monday that I have GD. There weren't any symptoms and in fact, I never thought it would be something I would get because I have a very healthy diet, I exercise regularly, I'm not overweight, and have no family history of diabetes. I do generally have a slow metabolism (which is why my diet is so healthy, so that I don't gain weight too easily), so maybe that has something to do with it. I haven't seen a dietitian yet - my appointment is on Thursday, but my doctor seems to think that I'll be able to manage it without insulin. I'm certainly eager to be able to start monitoring my blood glucose levels because finding out that your body is doing something other than what it's meant to do can be a bit unnerving.

It's important that everyone do the GCT (Glucose Challenge Test - which is the screening test) and then do the GTT (Glucose Tolerance Test) if their GCT results come back higher than they should be. Anyone can get GD, regardless of whether or not they're in a high risk category!
