Old portacot

:confused: Hi there was wondering if anyone has some advice on using an old portacot? My mother inlaw has on old one set up at her place for my 9 week old daughter to use, it is a little wobbly but my bubby girl isn't moving around too much at the moment so I'm thinking it might be fine for now. But I'm really not sure whether I should be using it at all and not quite sure how to go about telling my mother inlaw.

My mum has a portacot set up at her house for my DS. The cot is oooolllldd - from my brother 19 years ago! I found it to be quite fine when Andrew was a newborn and still, but nowadays he is FAR too boisterous for it. If he needs a sleep when we are there, I let him sleep in the pram.

We have now bought our own portacot so we have the option of taking it there with us if we are staying for awhile.

It shouldn't really be too wobbly. Just make sure it's all locked in OK and the mattress that comes with them is so thin, so we bought a piece of thick foam a cut it to size to fit the cot. It's much more better for bub.

It's always hard trying not to offend the MIL!! I'd just take your own portacot or let bubs sleep in the car capsule, pram, bassinet, whatever you have. When she's a bit older, tell your MIL that the old portacot is just too unstable. I told mine that Eloise was used to the smell and feel of her own cot & linen, thanks but no thanks. She lived with that.

Personally I wouldn't be using it as I have heard of a couple of deaths caused by travel cots collapsing on the baby. Maybe I am overly cautious but I would never use any baby equipment that I had a concern about. I would see if I could borrow a newer more sturdy one from someone else or you can buy them second hand. The most important thing is they need to be stable and not able to collapse on top of the baby.

I am sure your MIL will understand if you don't to use on safety grounds.

I wouldnt use it, I don't like the sound of "wobbly" furnitures lol, esp when its come to baby. Our baby is waaaaaaaay too precious!

I had similar issue with an ancient car seat that mil put in the car prior to our arrival so she could take me and bub somewhere. It was way too upright and very wobbly.

Thanks but no thanks. I didnt care if i offended, got hubby to take it out and put ours in. I am over overly intrusive mil's :o - sorry ive got issues when it comes to in-laws!

i say just be honest and upfront. if you dont feel right about it, speak up. good luck its a tricky relationship in my opinion!

Hey thanks for the link! I had been looking for a site like that but couldn't find anything - it's actually how I came a cross Bub Hub! That info gives me a bit more to back myself up with when i tell MIL that I don't feel comfy using that old wooden rickety thing!!
