Hi Ladies,
I am needing a bit of guidance with my level of health cover. I have been on the phone to Medibank Private and am still as confused as ever. I currently have the Smartplus level of cover for singles but have read I will need to upgrade to ensure bub is covered if he happens to end up in the special care nursery. Medibank have told me two different things - just call up after bub is born vs you need to transfer to couples cover prior to bub being born to avoid xxxx (didn't get the name) fees.
Eh? Anyone got knowledge on this?
Thanks
Hello,
I have SmartPlus cover with Medibank Private also.....I am not pregnant YET....I will be starting IVF treatment shortly. I havent looked fully into "baby" being covered as yet but to my understanding, you need to change to family cover about 3 months before bubs is due...to ensure bubs is covered incase they need any extra care.
If you don't mind me asking, has this cover been good whilst you have had fertility treatment? I did switch to this cover years ago to help with pregancy etc...and are hoping I have made a good choice.
Sorry for not really answering your question.
Have a great day;)

If you just have singles cover then it only covers you in hospital. As soon as your baby is born then he/she is a separate person so they need cover of their own and there might be a waiting period before it kicks in. That is why they recommend that you upgrade the cover so that if your baby does need any extra care then you don't have to pay all of the fees yourself.
You register baby with Medibank within the first 2 months after he/she is born.
Dh and I are on separate policies. When baby is born she will be put on mine and dh will come across to so we have family cover. Baby has NO waiting period it will be back dated from her birth.

I checked this thoroughly also, the info I received is from early 2010 though.
I was told you have 8 weeks after birth to add bubs to your policy (as Mrs P has said), and there is no problem if you're on a single policy or couples/family - they don't discriminate.
DH and I switched to family anyway 2 months after DD was born as it worked out cheaper for us.

Dear Tinkers,
Most of the money you receive back from IVF costs are from Medicare. No fund is very generous in supporting the huge costs involved with the IVF process. All my cover got me was some money off drugs but even that had a limit...I think about $300.00. It covers your hospital bed as a day patient but you have to pay excess. I ended up paying for every hospital admission except my final one (before my BFP) and I was admitted 4 times last year.
Good luck with making some babies.
Hi Newtoarea,
Thanks for your reply......yes, I have heard that PHI doesn't cover a HUGE amount for IVF.....however, I guess each little bit does count!
So when are you due? Do you know if you are having a little boy or girl?

SCN is covered by the public system anyway? The only thing you can change is requesting a private paed, which is what you'd be looking for to be covered, I believe. Inpatient, not outpatient :)

Dear Tinkers,
The sonographers have said I am due between 31st May and the 6 June. We are having a boy. When do you start IVF?
