Hi

DS is just over 11 months, and our pead has recomended we start him on cows milk for a number of reasons.

He has been on Karicare AR HA since about 6 months,as he has a small case of reflux, but is not on any meds for this as the pead says it isn't bad enough. I was wondering can you thicken the cows milk, and if so what should I use?

Thanks

Belinda

Dear Bpato,

To the relief of many parents, reflux will often lessen in bubs as they approach the 12 month mark, particularly if it was not too severe to begin with. Thickened milk or formula, or anti-reflux formulas, work for some children to reduce their reflux – it will not work in all cases. If you have found that it has really helped your child, then you may consider thickening his milk using a commercial food thickener.

If your paediatrician has recommended the cow’s milk for medical reasons, then they may also have specific recommendations for the type of thickener that is appropriate for your son.

It would also be worth trialing your little boy on plain milk to see if he can cope without thickening, now that he is older and probably spending more time upright, before continuing with thickener out of habit.
