View Full Version : Gestational Diabetes
Hi Ladies,
Do any of you, or have any of you had Gestational Diabetes?
Looks like I have it, have to go for the second 2 hr test next week.
What can you tell me about it? I know a little, bit not the full gamet.
Is it really dangerous for my bub? I'm so scared and feel like it's all my fault, because diabetes does not run in my family.
Any thoughts or comments would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks girls.

Hi Shilo,
Dont panic or beat yourself up. GD is actually more common then you think and there are heaps of mummy's on here that have had or have it.
I had it with my first pregnancy and am now pregnant again. I will be tested at 16wks to see if i have it.
I managed it with a healthy diet and light excersise. I had to ***** my finger 4 times a day to test my sugar levels.
If you do have it your Dr will probably refer you to a dietician who will help you make healthy eating choices.
Dont be scared you are going to have a big baby... my DD was 7lbs 6oz.
Thanks Taylors_mum that makes me feel better. Did you go to a dietician? Are they really helpful in making meal plans and that with you?
I just hope I don't have to have insulin injections, but if I hear the needle is only very small. I'll do anything I have to to make sure bubs is going to be healthy.
Is it true you are at greater risk of having a c-section if the bub is too big?
What is like, the worst possible thing that can happen to bubs? I'm just confused, some people say it's this really scary thing and if it goes undignosed it can be really harmful and other people don't seem too concerned?

Have a little read of this http://www.diabetesaustralia.com.au/multilingualdiabetes/HealthPros/whatis/gestational.htm
Even if you do end up with GD (you might not) as long as it is controlled and monitored then the risk to the baby is minimal. It is only if it is undiagnosed that there is a real threat! I had GD last time and had the two hour test yesterday for this pregnany - am just waiting on the results. Boo hoo. Last time I changed diet and excercised but it didn't seem to work for me so I had to have injections. They were fine, the needle is just a little pen needle and you press a button at the end to inject. Its actually easier than the finger ***** testing! Good luck.
