Just wondering why some of you choose to see OB's rather than your GP for your pregnancies??

Yes I am a private patient, and I have a private ob (seeing him today). He is WONDERFUL, love him to death.
He was so good to me throughout my last pregnancy and he saved my DD's life during labour.
But I have been dealing with my male GP up until now (until I could see my ob) and he has been fantastic too. So caring and so on the ball. Didnt hesitate to get me scans when I was bleeding.
I feel though I am in the best hands with an obstertition, they know everything about pregnancy, babies, womens health...everything!

I see an OB because I know he's an expert. Don't get me wrong, GPs are great too. In fact, since bub was born, I've depended heavily on my GP. However, I was just a panicky person who wanted to be in the care of an OB. Also, I'd been paying into private health insurance for so long, it seemed silly not to use it. I loved that I could see the same doc for the entire pregnancy, and have him deliver my baby. Also, it comforted me that his business was purely pregnant ladies (and gyno stuff). Sitting in his waiting room, there was little chance of catching the nasties that lurk in GP rooms. The cost of seeing my OB was the same as seeing a GP, so there was no financial disadvantage either.
with my first I saw an OB, through the public system, they just told me to go to one, I just assumed everyone has to. Then with my second the hospital had a midwife clinic, and I can honestly say, they were so much better then the OB ever was, much more caring, and easy to talk to.
This time around I was asked if I wanted to do the shared care, but as the midwife clinic is all medicare bulk billed, and the GP gives me an out of pocket expense, think I will stick to the clinic again this time.
I also see an OB because they are experts in that particular field and at the end of the day if you do have major problems during your pregnancy or at birth you want someone there who knows exactly what they are doing!

Our hospital doesn't have a pregnancy clinic and I didn't know about OB's until I was pregnant with my 3rd child. I've just always seen my GP, I thought everyone did that, lol. I have no idea what shared care is either, I've heard of it a few times over the last 2yrs, but it's probably something I'd never understand unless I was doing it.
Funny how it's done different everywhere.

Shared Care is when you split your visits between your GP and the hospital. I'm tossing up wether to do that or just vist the hospital the whole time.

I didnt see either, I saw a midwife. I think they are the experts in pregnancy and childbirth.
My GP is a non-practising OB :yelclap: so we get the best of both worlds. Although he is very old fashioned, and traditional, he is fantastic.

i will be seeing an ob from now on. i am going private and i like that fact that they are experts in their field - plus after my last visit with the gp i am really not happy and cant help but feel that she doesnt really care about me and the baby at all.
i was trying to talk to her and ask her questions and she was already at the door opening it and kicking me out.
im sorry if she thinks i am asking stupid questions but i have never had a baby before!!

I think it's also important to point out here that some people do not have the luxury of being able to use GPs or midwives exclusively. Provided you don't have any complications or health problems, a GP or midwife would be more than qualified to manage the pregnancy. However, IMO it's not worth taking risks if you have had previous problems, or existing health issues.

I'll be seeing my OB (once I find a good one!) and my GP every second month.
Tamara, I had a similar situation with my GP. He couldn't get me out the door fast enough to bring the next one in.
I like the idea of going to an ob, simply because it's their chosen field, they are much more specialised, and because of their access/connections should there be complications.

in my opinion u cant go past an experienced midwife, its there job to deliver and look after babies... they know the ins and outs and yeah sure, they arent doctors but they sometimes do a better job than some doctors these days lol
