I was taking Ferrogradumet but my GP said that they were the wrong ones, so I'm now taking FGF. It feels like they are starting to kick in, I can get out of bed in the mornings now without having to force myself too much.

no, I wont take them unless I get told I need them... I have too many problems with constipation as it is, dont want to add anything to make it worse.

My iron level is always low so I take one a day, BioGenetics brand it also has iron & the Vit B's in it.

I just had my levels tested and all OK except for the iron, still within the recommended range ... but only just. This time last year it was way under so I have managed to build it up :) . Apparently it takes a long time to build your iron levels up. I don't eat meat except seafood. I also take a cranberry tablet each day to help with any possible urinary infections :fingerscrossed: .

My o/b recommended that I also start on the Blackmores Gold Pregnancy Pills.

I started taking them early because I know that in my last 3 pregnancies the tiredness got too much for me in the early weeks. I was forgetting to take them every day though until this last week. They are really starting to kick in now.

Barging in on your April thread :D if you have issues with constipation and iron, try a liquid supplement like Floradix. The body absorbs it a lot better and there is less chance of constipation. ;)

I wont be taking unless advised.

I am taking my folate and thats enough for me - my stomach cannot tollerate vitamins (could be to do with my IBS?) and I throw them up very quickly.

Luckily folate doesnt make me do this.

If I take a multi v it repeats on me until I spew. Not nice.

Absolutely, the day I got my BFP, I went straight onto FGF, and have done with my last 2, hmmmm, do you think FGF produces 10lb+ babies??

Anyway, I eat extremely well, am as healthy as can be, but for some reason, my children take it all out of me (obviously) when Im pregnant, I havent had a pregnancy yet where I havent lost at least 15-20kg after my prepregnancy weight at 3 weeks p/p, my children are like leeches inside of me, taking it all from me.

You need extra iron when pregnant as the baby drains it all and it makes you feel really tired and faint. I take mine to help with tiredness more than anything. Can't afford to be tired when I have 3 kids and a house to run.

why u need iron?
"Iron is essential for making hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen to other cells. It's also an important component of myoglobin (a protein that helps supply oxygen to your muscles), collagen (a protein in bone, cartilage, and other connective tissue), and many enzymes. What's more, iron helps you maintain a healthy immune system.During pregnancy, your iron requirements go up significantly. First of all, your blood volume expands until you have almost 50 percent more blood than usual, so you need more iron to make more hemoglobin. You also need extra iron for your growing baby and placenta."
"When you're not getting enough iron, your stores become depleted over time. If you get to the point where you no longer have enough iron in your blood to make the hemoglobin you need, you become anemic. Iron-deficiency anemia (http://www.babycenter.com/refcap/pregnancy/pregcomplications/3073.html) can sap your energy (and cause a host of other symptoms) and make it harder for your body to fight infection"

ive been taking blackmores pregnancy and bf gold tablets , the doc reccomended me taking folic acid ... to help reduce risk of spinabifida etc
its got 5 mg of iron in each tablet

i have noticed since ive been taking them ... 2 tabs a day.. that im not as tired as i have been and im generally feeling ok.. until nausea kicks in lol

My GP recommends FGF as it is iron and folate. You can buy it over the counter at the chemist for about $7.

I love the FGF, it was recommended to me by Professor Dekker, who is the God of babies here in Adelaide, I had lots of problems with callum, still do, but he is such a lovely man, and recommended that I take it, I pay $5.70 for 30 tabs, and it contains, Dried Ferrous Sulfate (Iron) 250mg and FOlic Acid 300mcg, only problem is you need to eat with it, or you will cop a belly ache, but you will see a difference in about 2 days!
My sister swore by elevit, but at $30 a month, it seems alot of $ X that by 9 months, plus say 6 months B/F, $450! As opposed to FGF @ $85.

Being a nurse, the most common iron supp I give out is definitly the ferrogradument.

I think the docs order it because its cheap, well known and they know that they cant go wrong.

Only thing is that it can cause major constipation and your poo goes dark green/black.

So I would be taking alot of fibre in too if you are prone to constipation.

 I'm taking Pregnancy and Breastfeeding Formula, it has everything in it. As far as i know my last lot of blood test come back ok, so iron levels are good. taking just iron tabs make me way too constipated.

You will find that all/most iron tablets will make you backed up.
Drink plenty of water when on iron tablets.
Dont think its just one brand.I am pretty sure its with all.

Good luck..

I'm just taking the multi preg tablets from Balckmores and Vitamin E as well. Not planning on taking Iron either.

There is a lot of Iron in Veggies like Spinach so that sounds good to me.

Iron is part of my pregnancy multivitamin, Elevit.

I would not be taking straight iron supplements unless my doctor says I need it.
